Coolmine Therapeutic Community, a leading national addiction treatment provider, has announced an exhilarating fundraising event, the Coolmine Abseil, taking place on 27 September at Thomond Park, the iconic home of Munster Rugby.
The event is part of September’s International Recovery Month, where we celebrate the power of recovery and the strides our community members have made on their journey. This event invites brave participants to take the plunge from the iconic stadium—all in support of ensuring that Coolmine can continue to deliver its vital addiction recovery services.
Coolmine’s Mid-West services have seen a significant increase in demand, particularly among women. In 2023, there was a 26% increase in the number of women accessing addiction recovery services in the region, with alcohol being the primary substance for which treatment was sought (41%).
A cornerstone of Coolmine’s support for women, particularly mothers, is the Westbourne House mother and child residential facility in Limerick. This facility supported 44 women and 20 children last year, offering a unique programme that allows mothers to undergo treatment while remaining close to their children.
Limerick City’s Mahon House, part of Coolmine’s operations in the Mid-West, provides a wide range of services, including assessments for residential treatment, day programmes, case management, counselling, and mental health interventions. The facility is dedicated to a holistic approach that also includes positive social activities, organising 38 such events in 2023 alone, aimed at fostering a sense of community and promoting healthy living among those in recovery.
David McPhillips, Coolmine Mid-West Manager emphasised the importance of these services, stating, he said, “At Coolmine, our mission is to ensure that everyone seeking support on their journey from addiction to recovery gets the help they need.
“The Coolmine Abseil is more than just an event—it’s a powerful show of community solidarity with those reclaiming their lives. Every euro raised helps us support more people, providing essential services to individuals and families in need.”
The Coolmine Mid-West Manager explained each year, Coolmine must raise over €400,000 to continue delivering its services and supporting those on the path to recovery.
He said, “Through events like the Abseil and private donations, we strive to secure the resources necessary to continue our life-changing work. We’re energised by the community’s support and look forward to an unforgettable day at Thomond Park, united in our mission to support people overcome addiction and lead fulfilling lives.”
The Coolmine Abseil promises to be an exciting and impactful event, bringing together the community to support a vital cause. As part of September’s International Recovery Month, this event is a powerful demonstration of solidarity with those on their recovery journey. By participating or donating, supporters are ensuring that Coolmine can continue to meet the increasing demand for addiction services and provide life-changing support to those in need.
