Two young Abbeyfeale entrepreneurs, brothers Jack and Nick Cotter, have won University College Dublin’s AgTechUCD Agccelerator Programme with their farming system, Cotter Agritech.
The algorithm-based system allows farmers to identify animals needing anti-parasitic drug treatments, reducing the need to blanket treat livestock.
The use of Cotter Agritech reduces biodiversity damage and prevents parasite resistance in farm animals.
The brothers won the top prize of €10,000 on Wednesday, January 19, which will surely be a help to them as they prepare to launch Cotter Agritech in the next few weeks.
The UCD accelerator programme promotes early-stage Agricultural, Food, Vet and BioAgricultural technology startups in Ireland and the EU.
The brothers said of their success, “We’re delighted to take home this award at the conclusion of the AgTechUCD Accelerator Programme. A great start to 2022, as we move to launching our Cotter Agritech solution in the next few weeks.”
Congratulations to @TheCotterCrate on being named the AIB and Yield Lab AgTech Start-up of 2022 as part of the @AgTechUCD Agccelerator Programme. The County Limerick innovators have also seen great success with previous start-up, the Cotter Crate, which holds sheep comfortably in place for the safe and fast administration of vaccines and other shots.
The invention has proved wildly popular, winning the boys Engineers Ireland’s Student Innovator of The Year Award in 2019, and Best Overall Start-up Innovation at the 2019 Enterprise Ireland Innovation Awards.
Additionally, Jack and Nick have somehow found the time to win an Irish Quality Food Award for their organic, 100% grass-fed, antibiotic-free lamb, which is produced on their Abbeyfeale Farm.
