The Curraghchase 10k Run/Walk is in its 9th year this year. The event, which usually takes place in the scenic forest park in August, has now been brought forward to May and will be undertaken ‘virtually’. The organisers of the event, posted on their social media pages last week, asking their followers if they would take part in a virtual 10k in order to raise funds for frontline workers in Limerick and the response was huge.
Essentially, those who sign up will be running or walking a 10k distance in their own time, during a set timeframe, as the usual mass gathering of runners cannot take place. Individuals are asked to adapt their usual run/walk route and become creative – such as doing 10 1km laps.
Speaking to the committee member, Kayleigh Maher, she outlined how the Curraghchase Virtual 10k event has been organised in a couple of days. Curraghchase 10k Committee got in touch with their usual suppliers, Titan Sports Limerick, to design a running jersey and once-off medal. The decision to go with blue for the jersey was to show some solidarity to our family, friends and fellow Limerick people working so hard on the frontline.
Kayleigh told us that, “the Curraghchase Virtual 10k registration went live at 7.30 pm on Thursday evening and by Friday morning we were already at 250 registrations and watching the numbers climb every few minutes. A gentleman from the United States messaged us to explain he has registered and Irish friends of his will collect his jersey and medal. This was far beyond the response we were expecting. We are very excited here in Curraghchase and hoping to raise as much money as possible for the health heroes of Limerick. We run for you because you keep Ireland running for us.”
It is aimed to complete the virtual 10k walk/run between May 9th – 31st, 2020. However, if restrictions are still in place, this may be extended. If possible, please track your walk or run and post it to Facebook, Instagram or Twitter using #CurraghChase10k #WeRunForYou. The organisers have asked people to tag them and send them your screenshots and selfies in order to boost morale around the county and highlight everyone’s support for the frontline staff.
Limerick people have always supported each other and the fact that the Curraghchase virtual 10k is open to both walkers and runners makes it a fun activity for all.
