Dance Limerick presents ‘Marble and Bread’ on Mar 26-28

Dance Limerick and Limerick Arts Office present “Marble and Bread”, a promenade dance theatre piece by choreographer Megan Kennedy, Limerick’s first Dance Artist-in-Residence.  Performed in the disused Sailor’s Home from 26-28 March at 6pm and 8pm daily, “Marble & Bread” investigates the fragility of the mind and how closely abandonment and liberation lie beside each other.  Marble & Bread takes its starting point from stories from the archives of St Joseph’s Mental Health Hospital and is informed by interviews with former staff and with mental health patients in Limerick.

Originally from the US, Megan Kennedy trained at the renowned Alvin Ailey Dance Center in New York City and received a BA Honours Degree from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh.  She is Co-Artistic Director of the award-winning junk ensemble, based in Dublin, and has toured internationally with junk ensemble and other well-known theatre and dance production companies, including CoisCéim and Brokentalkers.  Megan is a Director of Dance Ireland and a Fellow of Salzburg Global Seminar

Dance Limerick is a resource organisation for professional dance in Limerick and beyond.  Through performances, talks, classes, workshops, projects and residencies, Dance Limerick provides opportunities for dance to be created, experienced and discussed in many ways, by all ages.  

The Dance Artist Residency Scheme is a partnership between the artist, Dance Limerick and Limerick Arts Office, Limerick City and County Council and is funded by the Arts Council.  The residency is based at Dance Limerick’s impressive facilities for dance at John’s Square.
The overall purpose of the Dance Artist Residency scheme is to stabilise and support a network of dance artists in residence throughout Ireland.  While the specific work programme for each residency is designed by the dance artist, in collaboration with their host venue and local authority, the aims of the scheme are:
– to consolidate professional and community-based dance practice in a regional context;
– to offer opportunities to dance artists throughout Ireland to engage in a programme of artistic work relevant to their own practice;
– to offer opportunities to local authorities and organisations/venues to develop dance practice in their area;
– to encourage the development of long-term planning and sustainability of independent dance activities.

The Sailor’s Home is a landmark building on O’Curry Street to the south of Limerick’s city centre.  Completed in 1857, this fine Georgian house was originally built as a refuge for sailors coming in at the nearby Limerick Docks, but was mainly used as a military barracks and, most recently, as a Garda training centre.  The property is now owned by Shannon Foynes Port Company, the successor to the Limerick Harbour Board.  The building has not been inhabited for some time and is a protected structure.  Shannon Foynes Port Company have invested heavily in remedial works to the property and have kindly made the house available for this production.
