A campaign has been set up by Castleconnell local, David Bourke, who will be walking over 250 km during the month of March to raise much-needed funds for Limerick Suicide Watch. David says, “I’m going to try to walk the legs off myself for the month of March.”

Nearly 30 years ago a school friend of David’s passed by suicide and since then, he has seen it take relatives, loved ones, colleagues, and a friend’s child. Despite the stigma attached to suicide slowly being eroded and awareness increasing, David recognises that sometimes the message still doesn’t, or can’t, get through to everyone who needs it. Limerick Suicide Watch is there to try to help those who have slipped through the gap.

 

Limerick Suicide Watch provides community outreach, a suicide awareness programme and works to identify and provide support to those in distress and who may be contemplating suicide. They are a voluntary based group that rely 100% on public donations.

Their focus is to keep eyes on the River Shannon and identify and provide support to those in distress and who may be contemplating suicide. Their patrol teams are on duty Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday night. Fundraising goes towards uniforms, jackets, PFD’s, and any other essential gear.

The Go Fund Me page David set up for the walk has already reached its €1,000 goal and hopefully will surpass it. He provides updates on the Go Fund Me page so you can follow him along on his journey.

David says, “Your support would be greatly appreciated by me, by the Watch and by those they help. Donate a few bob if you can and give me a wave or a beep if you pass me wearing a rut around the paths of Castleconnell.”
