Limerick’s own David Keating, 58, reached the pinnacle of Mount Everest on Monday, May 13, 2024, setting a new record in 2024 as the oldest Irish man to reach the Everest summit.

David Keating, accompanied by his climbing companion, 41-year-old Mick Fortune from Dublin, was guided by CTSS (Climbing the Seven Summits) guides and sherpas, who provided invaluable support throughout their journey.

Keating, a director at EI Co Ltd in Shannon, began his expedition on Good Friday, April 29, when he departed Limerick and the Everest climb was a culmination of a year of intense training with his many years of climbing experience. The push for the summit began on May 12 and the duo achieved their goal on May 13 following what was a gruelling climb.

Standing on the summit, Keating proudly held the EI and Irish flags, marking a symbol of David’s personal achievement and national pride, and in his words, he said, “If you can think it, you can do it.”

This achievement marks Keating’s sixth major summit to date, adding to his impressive mountaineering résumé. At the age of 58 years and 131 days old, David became the oldest Irish man to complete the climb.

Following his climb, Irish Seven Summits wrote on Twitter, “Congrats to David Keating (58) from Limerick who reached the summit of Everest on 13th May. He is 60th Irish climber to reach the top and completed the 77th Irish summit of Everest. He is the 5th climber from Limerick to do so. Congrats to David and his Sherpa and the CTSS team!”

The son of Tony and Geraldine, who reside in Dooradoyle, and the husband of Antoinette, and father to two children, Daryl and Jade, David’s achievement is a source of pride for his close and extended family, and friends, with their support and encouragement playing a crucial role in his journey to the top.
