Dochas Midwest Autism Support has launched a children’s speech therapy service in Limerick. The service is available to children with or without an autism diagnosis.

Dóchas Speech and Language Therapy is an affordable alternative for children and families who may be waiting months or years for assessment otherwise.

Established in 1997, Dochas Midwest Autism Support is a Limerick-based charity that provides support services to children and young people with autism and their family members.

The charity was formed in response to a lack of local autism services, and now Dochas’ speech therapy service also hopes to facilitate demand in Limerick.

An informative Facebook page has been created to complement and promote the new service. 

Dóchas Speech & Language Therapy administrator, Bernadette Hickey, told I Love Limerick, “At the new service, our speech therapist Roisin will meet each child for an assessment, which includes a written report and an idea of what the child’s needs are. She will then plan for speech therapy sessions.

“Meanwhile, the Dóchas Speech and Language Therapy Facebook page provides support to parents by giving tips which may help with different aspects of speech development.”

The new facility is viable for families as there are no long waiting lists. Each 45-minute therapy session costs €45, with assessments priced from €150 to €200.

“We have had some wonderful feedback from parents so far and are looking forward to meeting new faces in 2022,” says Ms Hickey.
