Dylan Flynn & The Dead Poets celebrate the launch of their new highly anticipated EP, ‘I’ve Been Living Life The Wrong Way’ with a homecoming Dolan’s gig

After a summer filled with outdoor shows and festivals in both Ireland & UK, Dylan Flynn & The Dead Poets now celebrate the release of their new highly anticipated EP, ‘I’ve Been Living Life The Wrong Way’, with a Dolans Warehouse gig on Saturday, November 22.

The Dolans Warehouse gig marks a special homecoming for the group as they near the end of a series of gigs which saw them travel through the UK and Ireland. The Limerick stop is the fourth-last of the announced gigs, which celebrate the release of  ‘I’ve Been Living Life The Wrong Way’.

Opening the EP, listeners meet ‘Forgiveness Is A Gun’, an upbeat, Indie-Rock anthem that made a huge statement when the band released it over the summer. The song details the story of a man facing imposter syndrome in his own relationship, as he feels like he doesn’t deserve his partner. The track is filled with driving drums, catchy sax hooks, and soaring vocals, reminiscent of 70s Bruce Springsteen or The War On Drugs – if they decided to sound more like The 1975.

Flynn said, “I spent some time in Nashville earlier this year, and this song was written while I was there. It was my first experience co-writing, and it made me realise that sometimes you just need to say exactly what you’re feeling. I still think there is a time and place for placing lyrics in a poetic world – but with this one, I wanted to be very direct.”

The second track, ‘Lately’, sees the band once again blending Indie-Rock with Americana songwriting, but this time around they are leaning further into the Folk-Rock world.

Flynn noted about ‘Lately’, “This song ended up being the first track I wrote after finishing our last album. It was one that crept up on me slowly, working on it bit by bit. I remember on our last tour, I used to play it in soundcheck. It’s been through a few changes and re-works, but I love what we landed on.”

Next we have the bands most recent single, ‘Turn The Page’, which dropped on the 15th of October. This track sees the band lean fully into the Americana sound that has been creeping in over recent releases.”

Speaking about ‘Turn The Page’, Flynn said, “This song was a tough one for me to write. The writing itself happened pretty quickly, but the reality I was faced with when I was done, really took a toll on me. No one ever wants to think about their parents passing, but it’s an inevitability. Even though this song is deeply sad and tough for me to sing, it’s one I’m really proud of, and hope it can connect with others and the same level it does for me.”

Closing the EP on a bittersweet note, we have the focus track of the EP, ‘I Love You (But You’re Breaking My Heart) – A broken love letter to Flynn’s hometown of Limerick. The track hears the frontman crying out for the his city to unlock it’s full potential; he wrestles with the fact that everything he has built and loves resides there, but at the same time feels like he is being pushed away. An apt closer for an EP that discusses themes of death, emigration, cost of living, life choices and relationships.

The EP was recorded and self-produced in the bands small home studio in Limerick City, with long term collaborator Mike Gavin (Windings). Mike co-produced and mixed the track, while Richard Dowling (Foo Fighters, Brian Eno, Villagers) mastered it.
