Down Syndrome Limerick “run” the DSL21K event again this year

By I Love Limerick Correspondent Dylan Frawley

Get your walking/running shoes on. Join the annual, virtual DSL21k event. Complete 21km over 21 days from anywhere in the world. Start and finish anytime between Monday, March 1 and Sunday, March 21. Celebrate the wonderful achievement on the last day of the event which is World Down Syndrome Day.

Down Syndrome Limerick (DSL) is a charity that accommodates children and adults with Down Syndrome in the Limerick area. The organisation is run voluntarily and provides essential services in many lives’ social, educational, and developmental spectrums. DSL also links parents to peer support channels that offer advice if they recently had a child with Down Syndrome.

Down Syndrome Limerick is a charity that provides much-needed therapies and services to children and adults with Down syndrome in Limerick city and county.  It is run by parents and families of people with Down syndrome on a voluntary basis.  Essential therapies like Speech & Language and Occupational therapy are provided.  Other services include counselling, peer support, information and training to parents, teachers, SNAs including school visits. Down Syndrome Limerick also run a successful adult education programme that helps adults with Down syndrome secure meaningful employment.  There are fun activities organised too such as swimming, cycle lessons, art, drama, dance, and youth club.

The DSL 21km will help spread awareness about Down Syndrome and the organisation’s services. Instead of calling off the event, they decided to make it a virtual race at home for everyone to participate.

While the event goes on for 21 days, the distance people run or walk each day does not matter. As long as the challenge and the total 21km is completed, then that is all that counts.

“We had such great fun last year that we have decided to “run” it again,” stated the spokesperson for the event.

Track your distance and time using your own fitness tracker or App and upload to our App each time to record your progress.  Keep going until you reach the 21km Goal!
