Photography exhibition shares the experiences of people with Down syndrome during Covid

Down Syndrome Limerick have just launched a photography exhibition called Lockdown Lookback: My Perspective. The project involved several of their members, who have Down syndrome, to work with a photographer to capture a memory that they had during the pandemic. For some this was scenic walks in their local area, for others it was time with family, and for more it was learning a new skill. The project empowered people with Down syndrome to share their experiences. They worked with professional photographer, Miriam Garcia Mortell of Life in Focus to capture their memories of the pandemic. Some of them learned some new photography skills too!

The photos are currently being exhibited in the fabulous Coach House at the People’s Museum of Limerick and will be available to see until Christmas. Each participant has two photos on display along with a short summary of the background to the photo. Down Syndrome Limerick were due to host a launch at the People’s Museum on 1st December but due to the current Covid situation they cancelled the event.  They have, instead, launched an online exhibition by means of a virtual gallery. They engaged award winning videographer Dominik Kosicki of Red Paw Media to film the virtual gallery for them. This gallery can be accessed HERE.

The Down Syndrome Limerick photography exhibition project was funded by Creative Ireland and Limerick City and County Council through the Creative Ireland Made in Limerick Grant 2021.

Ellen Tuffy, Chairperson of Down Syndrome Limerick said, “Many people with intellectual disabilities have suffered as a result of the pandemic – isolation, lack of services, lack of support as well as missing regular social activities and friends. During Covid-19, everyone was trying to engage with various activities to keep to a routine, occupy their time and look after their mental wellbeing. We wanted to give our members the opportunity to share how they spent their time during the pandemic. The Down Syndrome Limerick photography exhibition is a great project and we are very grateful to Limerick City and County Council and Creative Ireland for funding, which has allowed us to provide this opportunity to our members, while engaging with the public. As always thank you to our members who participated in the project and for sharing their stories with us.”
