Senator Maria Byrne will be launching the Dragonboat and a blessing will be given by Father Michael Wall on the day.

Dragonboating is an international venture proven to improve fitness and rehabilitation after breast cancer, so it is a great way for breast cancer survivors to get back on their feet and family and supporters can join in also.

Margaret Shovlin is a member of the Shannon Dragons and says that joining the Dragonboat racing was a great way for her to get back into exercise after her breast cancer recovery as a lot of sport she used to do were no longer suitable.

“It’s a great exercise for people who have had breast cancer as it’s been clinically proven to prevent lymphedema and swelling,” she said.

Brid O’ Connell, who is a breast cancer survivor, was the main driver to set up the Shannon Dragons when she held a meeting at the South Court Hotel which was covered by Limerick’s Live 95 FM late last year.

The Shannon Dragons received their Dragon Boat in March of this year and have been training since.

“We started training in March once a week but now we’re training twice a week because we are aiming to compete at a regatta in Cork this month,” Margaret Shovlin said.

The Shannon Dragons will be competing at their first Dragonboat race on August 12 and their next one will be in Dublin in September.

The Shannon Dragons set up in March this year and they have 40 members and welcome anyone who wishes to join.

The launch will be a fun filled day with face painting, music and a barbecue and guests will have a chance to try out the Dragonboat for themselves.
