Students help create inspiring new mural at Catherine McAuley School Limerick

Draw Out Urban Exhibitionists has completed a vibrant new mural in collaboration with the students of Catherine McAuley School

Draw Out Urban Exhibitionists Ltd., led by mural artist Catherine O’Halloran, has completed a vibrant new mural in collaboration with the students of Catherine McAuley School, Limerick.

Developed through a series of creative engagement workshops, the project encouraged students to explore ideas, share their imaginations, and contribute directly to the design process. The resulting mural is a playful and colourful artwork that reflects the creativity, individuality, and spirit of the school community.

Catherine McAuley School has a well-established, long, and successful history of catering for the needs of pupils with learning difficulties. Located in a beautiful green belt environment in Limerick City, the school serves a catchment area extending throughout Counties Limerick, Tipperary, and Clare. The school is committed to ensuring that all pupils receive the highest quality teaching and support in every aspect of their learning and development.

The mural project was coordinated by Art Teacher Clara Ryan, who worked closely with students and artist Catherine O’Halloran to ensure that the young people were at the heart of the creative process. Through their participation, students were empowered to shape their environment, develop creative confidence, and leave a lasting mark on their school community.

Principal Greg Brown said:

“We were thrilled to be given the opportunity for our pupils to be part of creating their own environment in a meaningful way. We thank our art teacher Clara Ryan, who led the project, and Catherine O’Halloran, our mural artist, for her creative vision.”

Project Lead and Art Teacher Clara Ryan said, “We are absolutely delighted with the mural. Our students gained so much from working with a professional artist. It is so important for young people to have opportunities to engage with creativity and help shape their school environment. We are grateful to Creative Engagement for the funding, to Sharon Huban and our Principal Greg Brown for their support, and especially to Catherine O’Halloran for her inspiring vision and kindness. Catherine has transformed our school and continues to make a remarkable impact across Limerick. We are incredibly fortunate to have her carry out this project.”

Lead Artist Catherine O’Halloran said, “It has been an absolute privilege to work with the students and staff of Catherine McAuley School. From the very beginning, the children brought incredible enthusiasm, imagination, and joy to the process. Their ideas inspired every stage of the mural’s development, and it was wonderful to see their confidence grow as they watched their creativity come to life on such a large scale.

I am deeply grateful to Clara Ryan, Greg Brown, Sharon Huban, and the entire school community for their support and encouragement throughout the project. Most importantly, I want to thank the students, whose energy, humour, and unique perspectives made this experience so memorable. Creating art alongside them was a genuine pleasure, and I hope the mural serves as a lasting celebration of their creativity, individuality, and sense of belonging within the school.”

The completed mural now serves as a vibrant focal point within the school, celebrating creativity, participation, and community. The project demonstrates the power of collaborative public art to transform spaces while giving young people a meaningful voice in shaping their surroundings.
