Limerick Youth Theatre’s Transition Year Theatre Company proudly presents This is a Room by Dylan Coburn Gray, directed by Shane Hickey-O’Mara. As the writer says, ‘This is a play about the first eighteen years of your life and all the things you may or may not learn in that time. It’s about how after those eighteen years you’re expected to know certain things, even though there isn’t a class. It’s about how that’s scary, even if you’re prepared. It’s about how lots of people aren’t, not even remotely”.

Working with 31 transition year students from schools in Limerick city and county, the play will be staged by the Transition Year Theatre (TYT) Company at Dance Limerick on February 26 and 27.

The electric new play by Dylan Coburn Gray debuted at the Dublin Theatre Festival 2017; an astonishingly frank and intimate discussion about the complexities of growing up in 21st Century Ireland. The play, devised with the input of teenage members of Dublin Youth Theatre, looks at our individual human need to belong: to feel safe, to feel sheltered, in essence, to feel at home. As Shane Hickey O’Mara explains, ‘we are presented with a myriad of different homes: from the sense of home that we gain through falling in love, to a home marred with the ubiquitous threat of violence, to be at home in oneself, and, more often than not, the daily threat of losing that home completely. A play comprised of 15 unconnected scenes detailing the daily lives of young people in today’s Ireland, This is a Room, uniquely captures the zeitgeist, presenting its audience with themes of homelessness, family breakdown, domestic violence, isolation and hope.’

The play is experimental in its structure, being composed of a series of vignettes, short scenes ranging from comedic duologues, heart-breaking monologues to ensemble movement and chorus work. Up-and-coming Irish playwright, Coburn Gray has infused his play with both music and movement, in addition to direct audience address, giving the production an undeniably contemporary feel. This is a Room touches on themes of social anxiety and isolation, homelessness and direct provision, first love, family breakdown, mental health, and sexuality.

Limerick Youth Theatre is delighted to be able to run its Transition Year Theatre Company for the ninth year thanks to the generous support from Limerick City and County Council through its Social Intervention Fund. 31 transition year students from 9 schools from the city and county can participate in this 28 day programme free of charge, giving some students access to the arts which would not have been possible. TYT is designed to introduce young people from all backgrounds to every aspect of theatre, from stage management, design to performance. We aim to instil our company members with confidence, to fuel their imaginations and to nurture empathy. By the end of the process, 31 students learn how to make theatre, but essentially they learn that as an ensemble they can create great art together.

Transition Youth Theatre (TYT) is a special outreach programme offered to transition year students by Limerick Youth Theatre. The programme gives students interested in all aspects of theatre a chance to stage their own production with a professional crew in an established venue in Limerick City.

Limerick Youth Theatre (LYT) is a company of young performers, dancers, writers, designers, directors, producers and film-makers, located in Limerick. LYT was set up in 1997 with a vision of providing a unique opportunity for young people from all backgrounds to cross social/cultural divides through youth drama experiences. It runs a two-year training course in theatre and performing arts.
