€20 million funding available for Community Groups urged to help renew their Towns and Villages

Limerick City and County Council is calling on community groups and associations to combine their resources and submit applications for the 2017 Towns and Villages Scheme as there is €20 million funding available for Community Groups.

The Town and Village Renewal Scheme is an initiative under the Government’s Action Plan for Rural Development, Realising our Rural Potential, and is part of a package of national and local support measures to rejuvenate rural towns and villages throughout Ireland.

Up to 300 towns and villages will benefit from €20 million funding available for Community Groups under the 2017 scheme, which will be made available through the Local Authorities over the next 15 months to support rural regeneration.

The scheme is specifically targeted at rural towns and villages with populations of less than 10,000.  Applications from towns can range from €20,000 to a maximum of €100,000.  Funding of up to €200,000 will also be considered for a limited number of projects which can deliver exceptionally strong economic benefit to a town and its outlying areas.

A total of €20 million is available for the scheme which is run by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs.

The selection of projects under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme for 2017 will be by means of a competitive process.  Final project selection will be made by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, on the basis of proposals submitted by the Local Authorities.

Limerick City and County Council is seeking expressions of interest from town/ village groups who may have suitable project(s) for consideration under this competitive scheme.  All expressions of interest will be assessed based on the priorities as contained in the Scheme Outline.  A maximum of 15 proposals will be selected by Limerick City and County Council for development into detailed applications from interested parties, which will then be submitted to the department by the end of June 2017.

Rosie Webb, Senior Architect with Limerick City and County Council said, “This is an ideal opportunity for local groups who have plans for their area to get funding.  We are calling on those with plans to contact use so they can be included in the competition.”

“We are entitled to submit a maximum of 15 proposals, and since it is a competitive process, it is possible for all of them to be funded.”

“Last year Abbeyfeale, Askeaton, Athea, Bruff, Cappamore, Newcastle West, Patrickswell and Rathkeale were allocated funding from the scheme and all works have been completed which are benefitting the entire community.”

Deadline for receipt of forms is 4pm on Friday 26th May 2017
