Limerick’s own Eddie Vallely has achieved the remarkable honour of featuring in the newly released Sunday Miscellany – A Selection 2018–2023, edited by Sarah Binchy.

The local literary community is celebrating as Eddie is the only Limerick writer featured in the collection, sharing pages with respected voices from across the country, including former President Michael D. Higgins.

Eddie has been writing with the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB) Creative Writing Class in St Saviours Community Hall for the past number of years and has been a valued contributor to their annual creative writing booklet, which showcases poetry and short stories by local writers. The class is one of many LCETB programmes held in St Saviours Hall.

LCETB Tutor, Elieen Nevin, said, “These community education classes continue to grow each year and are always delighted to welcome new members at the beginning of every term.”

In 2023, Eddie reached a new milestone when he read one of his short stories on RTÉ’s Sunday Miscellany radio programme; an achievement now celebrated further by the story’s inclusion in the new anthology.

Though a relatively new voice in the writing world, Eddie’s life has been rich with experience. After sailing the seven seas throughout the 1990s, he returned home to Limerick, where he spent over 20 years serving the public as an Information Officer with the Limerick Citizens Information Centre. He also sat on its board for 15 years, offering leadership and dedication through periods when there were no volunteers to assist. Eddie lives in Limerick with his wife Margaret and is a proud father to his daughter Jacintha and grandfather to Cian.

To mark his achievement, St Saviours and the LCETB are hosting a special celebration on Wednesday, December 10 at 2 pm in St Saviours Hall, Lord Edward Street. The event is open for the public to join in honouring this wonderful milestone for a much-loved local writer.

The celebration will also mark the end of another successful term of community education classes in St Saviours. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet members of the creative writing class: Annette Egan, Mabel Mescall, Brian Hodnett, Phil McNamara, and Mick O’Brien. It also provides the chance to chat about the wide range of classes running in the hall. Learners from other LCETB community education programmes will also be present to share their experiences.

Sharing their pride, the organisation said, “Congratulations, Eddie—your community is incredibly proud of you.”
