Mid-West jobs boost as Edwards Lifesciences opens its doors in Shannon

Mid-West jobs boost as Edwards Lifesciences opens its doors in Shannon

American Company and the global leader in patient-focused innovations for structural heart disease and critical care monitoring, Edwards Lifesciences opened its doors in Shannon for its first day of business last Wednesday.

The company is planning on hiring around 60 people this year across different areas, such as engineering, professional management and production staff to work at its current site in the Shannon Free Zone.

Minister of State for Employment, Pat Breen TD attended the first day of business at the Shannon site and describes the new facility as very positive for the Mid-West before congratulating everyone involved in bringing it to fruition.

The company’s headquarters are situated in Irvine, California, USA and employ over 12,000 people worldwide. Over the coming years, Edwards estimates that there will be a €80 million investment and 600 jobs created in the Mid-West region of Ireland.

Dr Pat Daly, Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Economic Development with Limerick City and County Council said: “The investment by Edwards is a major vote of confidence for the region.  We are demonstrating again and again that we can compete with other areas in Ireland and around the world for foreign direct investment.”

Plant manager, Nathan Tenzer, said Edwards look forward to getting their operations in Shannon underway and continuing to work closely with the communities in the Mid-West as they pursue their longer-term plan of opening a purpose-built facility in the region.

Edwards Lifesciences’ roots date back to 1958 when Miles “Lowell” Edwards set out to build the first artificial heart. Edwards was a 60-year-old, recently retired engineer holding 63 patents in an array of industries, with an entrepreneurial spirit and a dream of helping patients with heart disease. His fascination with healing the heart was sparked in his teens when he suffered two bouts of rheumatic fever, which can scar heart valves and eventually cause the heart to fail.
