The Elemental Arts Festival 2017 launch was yesterday at the Hunt Museum and this year’s festival promises to be one of the best yet.

Now in its sixth year, the Elemental Arts Festival was founded with the intention of animating the city and giving people entertaining reasons to spend time enjoying the city while experiencing something different and engaging.

With a selection of local, national and international acts and events in the programme, Elemental Arts Festival provides a diverse mix to suit a wide variety of tastes.

Throughout the weekend of September 8 to September 11 there will be a wide range of great events taking place in the city such as the Elemental Live Stage in the Hunt Museum on Friday, September 8 or the screening of the classic Forrest Gump at People’s Park on September 9

There will also be three weekend long events the first of which being Firefox, an installation of hand cut paper sculptures and lights by Harikrishnan Panicker and Deepti Nair in Ormston House.

The second is an interactive walking tour around Limerick City directed by Sharon Slater encountering some of its key historical locations and places of interest.

The final weekend long event is entitled Scenes of Limerick and it will be a walk-up screening of daily Limerick life captured in archive footage, projected on to a wall on Thomas Street. This will run from dark to light every night of Elemental.

Elemental is underpinned by a green ethos and as such has been short-listed twice for the National Green Awards for its focus on sustainability.

Run on a voluntary basis, Elemental strives to be as inclusive as possible, so that everyone can have an active part in arts and culture in Limerick.

Jennifer Allen, artistic director and co-founder of Elemental said at the launch: “We started Elemental to animate the city and to showcase the arts in all of their guises, we have a great mix of arts from dance to street theatre, visual art with lots of workshops so people can participate in the art.”

She continued: “When we started we felt like Limerick needed an arts festival and we are in year six of it now and it’s been building gradually, it’s a labour of love or madness or maybe both”.

“Elemental is very family friendly and accessible, it’s not a high-brow curator driven festival, it’s more engaging and fun and hopefully accessible as possible” Jennifer concluded.
