Emerging Limerick Filmmakers (ELF) were awarded “Best Initiative for Young People” at the Media Literacy Awards that took place in Virgin Media Studios on November 21st.

The awards were hosted by Colette Fitzpatrick. This was in recognition of their work on the Scenario X project, where two genre films were made with mentored support to a professional standard. The project was supported by the Arts Council, with additional support by Screen Ireland, the Limerick Arts Office and the National Youth Film and Animation Academy.

The two films, Rat King and Mob the Trench, have won multiple awards in Ireland, New York, Palma and the UK, including Best Group at Fresh Film Festival.

ELF was up against the Rubbish Film Festival by Createschool who operate from the Screen Hub in Wicklow and the Into Film Game Programme funded by Screen Northern Ireland. Other winners included Webwise for Best General Media Literacy Initiative and Digital Media & You Roadshow by Beat 102 103 for Best Media Led Media Literacy Initiative.

Two Special Recognition Awards were awarded to TG4’s Máire Aoibhinn Ní Ógáin and Dr Ricardo Castellini da Silva for their contributions to media literacy in Ireland.

Published on the Awards website, “The judges felt that this project was an excellent example of an empowering project which enhanced participants’ skills and critical media understanding through professional-level filmmaking experiences.”

“I’m really surprised, I know this was a very competitive category and the projects were both amazing,” says Artistic Director Pete Moles.

“It’s not easy to do ambitious projects with young people, it takes a lot of work, and it can sometimes feel like you’re operating in a vacuum. The recognition of the work we do really matters. I hope this will encourage future investment in youth arts programmes and infrastructure  in Limerick. We’re lucky to have good support from our local Arts Office, from Screen Ireland and Film in Limerick and from Councillor Elisa O’Donovan.”

Roísín Leavy-Sahin, director of Rat King, said, “As an emerging filmmaker, scenario X has been a monumental experience for me. To say that my team and I created an award-winning, fully funded short film by the age of 18 (and some of us as young as 14) is an achievement few can claim. Scenario X has taught us that filmmaking is HARD work but it’s probably some of the most rewarding out there. It allows us to bring an idea to life, nurturing it collaboratively from its inception to its final realization. Everyone’s skill sets are as valuable as each other’s and it’s through this collective effort that something truly beautiful is created.”

Scenario X will be realised again in 2025, with another short film being made supported by the Screen Ireland Stakeholders Scheme.
