Engage, Discuss and Get Involved in Limerick’s Bid for European Capital of Culture 2020

This summer the team supporting Limerick’s campaign for the designation of European Capital of Culture 2020 is asking the broader Limerick community to engage, discuss and get involved in Limerick’s bid for European Capital of Culture 2020.

Limerick’s bid needs to reflect the ideas, ambitions and values of its communities, and what Limerick can offer to the common European culture. And, to do that, we need you!

Between June and July 2015, a series of activities, including ‘Kitchen Table Conversations’, Pop-up Culture Shops and community-based workshops will take place where people can feed their ideas, show their support and generally get involved in the bid campaign.

Starting with the launch of the Learning Hub’s Youth Café on Monday 8 June, Limerick 2020 will be supporting community-based activities across the city and county.

“Limerick has such a vibrant cultural community and programme, especially leading on from the 2014 experience, and we’re not trying to re-invent the wheel,” said Dominique Bouchard, Limerick 2020 curator of participation and engagement. “Rather, we think it’s important to help support groups who are already doing outstanding work and hopefully shine a bit more light on their achievements.”

The first events will take place beginning next week and include activities such as:

·       Limerick Learning Hub’s Youth Café launch (8th June)

·       An Upcycling workshop in Moyross (9th June)

·       A Family Reminiscence Session in Hospital (24th June)

·       A children’s creative writing and colouring competition is underway in partnership with the Limerick Library service and a round-table discussion in the Castletroy retirement village is also planned to take place.

·       A popup Culture Shop in the Milk Market and Crescent Shopping Centre on the way soon

These and other upcoming activities have been developed in partnership with community-based organisations to ensure community ownership and relevance.

In addition to events, round-table discussions, called ‘Kitchen Table Conversations’ will take place around the city and county, where people can come together and share their ideas.

A Kitchen Table DIY toolkit will be also be launched soon so that anyone can host a conversation in their community, even Limerick people living abroad!

Limerick 2020 is about working in partnership – if you or your group would like to get involved. We want to hear your voice – so have your say, host a Kitchen Table Conversation, help out at a Popup, or tell us your ideas online
