Engage with Limerick’s heritage for Heritage Week 2015

Limerick City and County Council is working with local communities and the Heritage Council to promote and raise awareness of Limerick’s diverse and unique heritage for National Heritage Week 2015.

National Heritage Week 2015 takes place from 22nd – 30th August and is part of European Heritage Days which is celebrated in 40 countries.  Ireland is one of 23 countries that have chosen the theme of raising the awareness of the value of industrial and design heritage.

Limerick City and County has a very strong tradition in industry including lace making, clothing manufacturing at Tait’s Clothing Factory, the docklands, milling at Ranks, Limerick’s bacon factories, and the many creameries scattered around the county.

Diverse events have been organised in the areas of archaeology, artefacts, folklore, music, genealogy, historic buildings and gardens, local and military history, circus crafts, and traditional skills such as lace making and basket weaving.

Events take place in Limerick City and throughout the county in Kilfinane, Rathkeale, Kilmallock, Newcastle West, Bruff, Pallasgreen, Adare and Abbeyfeale, and most are free. 

Highlight events include:

  • ​Genealogy Event: 20-23 August
  • Guided Tours of Desmond Castle: 22 August
  • Tait Clothing Factory Seminar: 26 August
  • Limerick lace making Class: 28 August

Local communities, The Hunt Museum, The Office of Public Works, Limerick City and County Council’s Limerick Museum and Archives, and archaeological service, and members of the private sector are celebrating and giving the public the opportunity to explore Limerick’s heritage. 

A booklet by the Heritage Council will be made available at local libraries in the coming weeks.
