EVA International 2018 announces a preview list of artists

By ilovelimerick correspondent Frances Watkins

The 38th edition of EVA International 2018 connects the narrative futures of early twentieth century Ireland with the sexual and identity politics of the present day. The exhibition takes its starting point from the painting Night Candles are Burnt Out (1927) by Irish artist Sean Keating, which presents an allegory of the Irish psyche at the advent of the construction of Ardnacrusha – a hydroelectric dam, built that same year on the border of County Limerick. A film by Oscar Winning director Alejandro González Iñárritu has been selected for the art festival next year. Alejandro is known for directing the Oscar winning film Birdman.

Open to the public from April 14 to July 8, 2018, across various locations, institutions and public spaces in Limerick City and is curated by Inti Guerrero.

A film by the Oscar Winning Director of Birdman, Alejandro González Iñárritu, will be featured at the festival next year.

The construction of Ardnacrusha encompasses a number of intertwined themes and narratives that unfold through artworks by Irish and international artists addressing themes of nationhood, technological progress, electricity and metaphors of power. Power upon the body of others, in particular society’s control over reproduction, will be integral to the exhibition. Rather than a monolithic thematic exhibition, the 38th EVA International wishes to establish a cosmology of exhibitions; a kaleidoscopic ecology of intertwining display narratives with essayistic, retinal and bodily narratives.

EVA International is Ireland’s biennial of contemporary art. Every two years EVA works with world-renowned curators to create a 12-week programme of exhibition and events that engages with the people and city of Limerick. Since being founded in 1977, EVA International has worked with 2,098 artists and 41 curators from around the world, bringing innovative exhibitions and international audiences to Ireland. The 2018 edition of EVA International 2018 will be curated by Inti Guerrero (Colombia/Hong Kong) and will take place from 14 April to 8 July 2018.

Artists’ projects are selected through an international open and invited call for proposals and exhibitions take place in both gallery and non-gallery spaces. A programme of talks, workshops and events accompanies the exhibitions and provides further opportunities for audiences to engage. The Young EVA programme fosters and develops younger audiences, encouraging engagement with and understanding of contemporary art.

EVA International 2018 is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Limerick City and County Council Arts Office, Limerick School of Art & Design, Limerick Institute of Technology and works in close partnership with Limerick City Gallery of Art. EVA International has a proactive approach to collaboration and partnerships, working with organisations across Limerick, Ireland and internationally.

So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
