The Friends of the Hunt Museum Lunchtime Lecture will be held on Tuesday 11th February at 1pm in the Captain’s Room at The Hunt Museum.
The Rt Revd. Michael Burrows, like many members of the clergy, has been a lifelong railway enthusiast and is a member of the Irish Railway Record Society.
He has a particular interest in the railway history of the various places he has lived. During the lecture, he intends to share a few thoughts and anecdotes, focusing on the railway heritage of the region, highlighting its eccentricities and charm.
The year is fitting for such a reflection, as it marks the 200th anniversary of the opening of the world’s first public railway, the Stockton and Darlington in England.
The railway mania spread to Ireland shortly thereafter in 1834, and since then, the railways have experienced moments of glory as well as challenges. The ongoing reconstruction of the line to Foynes may serve as a symbol of hope for the future.
Free Admission. All Welcome!
