To kick off this week’s episode of the  I Love Limerick’s Podcast show we talked about Cycle for Care 2020 with Paul Kimmage in aid of Irish Hospice Foundation . Sports journalist and former professional cyclist Paul Kimmage is calling on cycling enthusiasts from Limerick to join him and his daughter Evelyn for Cycle for Care 2020 in aid of the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) this June.

The duo will lead the way across the stunning landscapes of Northern Italy Sunday, June 28 until Saturday, July 4, for the twelfth Cycle for Care. They will be pedaling for the IHF’s Nurses for Night Care. This is a free national service for people with illnesses other than cancer, which enables them to fulfill their wish to die at home. The demand for the service grew by almost 20% in 2019.

Next up we talked about A new LYS Rural Youth study from Limerick Youth Service (LYS) on young people growing up in rural County Limerick was launched by the Deputy Mayor of Limerick, Cllr. Adam Teskey, at Rathkeale Youth Space.

The report, Baseline Study & Needs Analysis of Young People (10-18yrs) in Rural County Limerick, was commission by LYS to capture the experiences of young people in rural communities.
Welcoming guests to packed Rathkeale Youth Space, LYS Chairperson Patrick Lynch congratulated LYS and the researchers Sue Targett and Neil Haran, on producing an excellent piece of work ‘that captures the voice of young people in rural areas.’

The report also highlights the importance of youth clubs in rural areas, the increase of stress in teenagers and challenges addressing issues such as sexual health.

Next we talked about Regeneron, who donated €20,000 worth of food and household goods this week to four Limerick-based non-profit organizations – Novas, Peter McVerry Trust, Mid-West Simon Community, and Focus Ireland as part of their community outreach.

The much-needed supplies were purchased by Regeneron and delivered by employee volunteers on Friday, January 31, to help the charities at a time of year when donations are traditionally at their lowest. Peter McVerry Trust and Mid-West Simon Community received both food and supplies of cleaning goods and hygiene products. Peter McVerry Trust will use the goods to support their recently housed service users and the donation to the Mid-West Simon Community will be distributed via their wee

kly food bank to their community clients and to families currently living in their emergency family hub.
Novas received a month’s supply of meat for its kitchen staff to prepare nutritious meals for 40 clients living in Novas’ McGarry House and 30 clients living in their night shelter. Regeneron also provided non-perishable and frozen food that will be distributed through Novas’ family service.

Speaking about the charitable donations, Niall O’Leary, Vice President, and Site Head IOPS, Regeneron, said; “Regeneron donated these goods as we are committed to the local communities in the region. In addition to our company’s financial contributions, our people work tirelessly throughout the year volunteering for local charities, schools and community programs.”

Next up we discussed LEAF, the Limerick Electronic Arts Festival, will see leaders of the technological world join forces with pioneers of electronic music to entertain the masses at this brand-new festival, now taking place from September 10-13, 2020. With such a diverse line-up of world-renowned talent which encompasses music and experts at the top of their game, moving the festival to September has given LEAF the scope to expand and firmly put Limerick on the map for this international festival.

The headline show will be hosted at a pop-up warehouse space on the banks of the River Shannon and will mark the beginning of LEAF. Away from the music side of things in the industrial setting of the Cleeves Factory, the Intersection pillar of the festival on Friday, September 11 will be a day covering everything from the ethics of Artificial Intelligence to how to build a brand. With esteemed guests ranging from CEOs to mega-influencers, this conference will be the first of its kind.

Next on the podcast we discussed some more exciting news about the Limerick music scene. On Saturday, February 15, Paranoid Visions make a welcome return to Limerick to play Overdose 2.0 at Costello’s Milk Market Bar. The all-day punk and DIY festival will run from noon to late and features some of the best punk acts in Ireland.

The line-up includes – The Nilz, Audible Joe’s, The Turn, Dirty Casuals, No Collusion, New Age Messiah, Miss Fragile, The Lord Reverend Mongo Joans and The Coathanger Solution and Death By Washboard.
Paranoid Visions originally formed in 1982, before breaking up in 1992. Sporadic reunions saw them play support slots for The Sex Pistols and the Damned’s 25th anniversary in 2001.

The band has been going through a prolific period, releasing several studio albums, delving back into their archive for further releases and playing large festivals internationally.

Next we talked about The ISBC Personal Strategic Direction Workshop is coming to the Nexus Innovation Centre and is calling all founders, managers and key decision-makers in the business industry to attend an innovative workshop designed to create a safe environment that provides the necessary tools to build an ideal version of your business that will bring meaningful success.

The workshop consists of four sessions and takes place from Wednesday, February 12 – Wednesday, March 11 at 9:30 am- 1: 30 pm in the Nexus Innovation Centre, University of Limerick. Tickets cost €60 per organization (2 people max.). Refunds up to 7 days before the event.

Finally we discussed The Limerick Spring 2020 Festival of Politics and Ideas returns for the seventh year since its launch, taking place on Thursday, February 27 until Saturday, February 29, 2020. This festival opens the floor to the citizens of Limerick and beyond, to meet, discuss and inspire each other into action beyond election term times. With this year’s theme being ‘Home is where the heart is’, there will be specific focus on the housing crisis and global climate change.

Jennifer Moroney Ward, Limerick Spring Festival Coordinator, said, “We are delighted to return with a focused programme of events in 2020. The theme is home is where the heart is and we are looking at the housing crisis locally and globally but also at the climate crisis on our shared home, planet earth.”
