Directed by Margaret Haugh
Lime Tree Theatre | 12 – 16 November | €21/€18
The action takes place in a hedge-school in Baile Beag County Donegal. The year is 1833.
Friel gives us an insight into a small community affected by an Imperial endeavour to replace local indigenous place names with an English translation. In doing so, a significant part of our Irish heritage becomes lost forever.
While dealing with the complexities of interpretation and language, we are privy to scenes of great hilarity but also glimpse the harsh reality of what lies ahead for a community at the crossroads of change.
Translations is considered to be Friel’s best dramatic work.
