Fight Fatigue and Fibromyalgia event comes to Limerick This February

In 2015 Fibromyalgia was recognized by the World Health Organisation as an official long-term illness affecting 20% of the global population, this illness affects as many as 2% of the Irish population, with no official recognition or direct subvention in its primary care by the Irish Government. With upcoming elections and in a pitch to create awareness, whilst invoking national change, a group of Limerick healthcare professionals, namely the Ambassador for Arthritis Ireland and the Nutritional Therapists Organisation of Ireland (NTOI), have rallied together to create an awareness event that takes this illusive illness ‘Out Of The Dark.’  The event takes place on Tuesday, February 25 at Castletroy Park Hotel and is entitled ‘Fight Fatigue and Fibromyalgia’.

At this Fibromyalgia event, Practical life solutions, coping strategies and support for symptom control are all offered to sufferers, their extended family and friends and a wider audience.

The aim of the Fibromyalgia event is to share vital information and expert advice on a nationally unsupported illness. The event includes keynote speakers as well as practical life solutions. The day represents a ‘Call to Action’ to bring this invisible and disease ‘Out of The Dark’ offering real support for those affected where no national subvention is offered in its primary care as part of a national budget.

Andrea O’Rourke McMahon Ambassador for Arthritis Ireland and who lives with Fibromyalgia said, “It’s difficult to explain the daily struggle people have living with Fibromyalgia. The pain, the chronic fatigue and the side effects of medication. All the while putting on a brave face on to protect friends and family, while looking perfectly fine on the outside.”

She concluded, it’s great that Limerick city is now holding an awareness Fibromyalgia event that will offer disclosure and solutions for living with an invisible disease, which can be challenging but learning to live well is what is being offered on the day. This is greatly empowering for any sufferer and their family. A social movement towards acceptance is a great starting place.’

The event boasts three expert speakers in the field of Fibromyalgia with a specific focus on fatigue and symptom management. The day focuses on sharing resources while shedding a light on the diseases often invisible and misdiagnosed in nature.

Sinead Dundon, ‘The Tummy Tamer’, qualified Nutritional Therapist organiser of the day added, “I feel good food is a foundation for good health. There is no clear cause of Fibromyalgia, but research has shown that removing certain foods and supporting healthy lifestyle habits can ensure a greater quality of life. Identifying and removing harmful foods is essential. In addition, using beneficial foods herbs, and supplements with evidence for reducing pain, brain fog and fatigue is key. We are running this event with the intention of bringing awareness to a hidden and for far too long side-lined illness.”

Sheila O’Hanlon Systematic Kinesiologist shared, “Fibromyalgia is a painful disorder of the muscles rather than joints. In my ongoing work, projects and workshops with clients I have discovered some common denominators and Systematic Kinesiology techniques that have a high improvement rate in reducing the symptoms of exhaustion, pain, and low mood.”

Jinny Ross massage therapist and expert uses innovative Fascial Stretch to relieve pain concluded, “Studies support the beneficial use of myofascial release for fibromyalgia. It is also my experience in over 19 years that this technique helps with pain relief, sleep and quality of life. We look forward to sharing new and innovative ways to cope with the condition and offer hope for a better life vision.”

The half day event offers new positive options for people suffering with Fibromyalgia and sheds a light of awareness on its invisibility.
