Fealefest, a celebration of Abbeyfeale and Sliabh Luachra’s rich music tradition, will take place on Saturday, September 11. The free event will feature concert performances from trad musicians as well as a series of workshops for teenage trad enthusiasts.

Expert traditional group Breaking Trad will introduce a host of young West Limerick musicians to the trad stage in an intergenerational festival concert at the Glorach Theatre in Abbeyfeale, which will be streamed online free of charge from 8pm.

Masterclasses in concertina, banjo, accordion, flute and fiddle will be hosted by some of the country’s greatest trad musicians for intermediate to advanced players between 12 and 18 years of age. These events will take place at Abbeyfeale’s FET Centre, free of charge, between 11am and 2.30pm.

Tim Collins of the Kilfenora Céilí Band will deliver a masterclass in concertina, while Marcus Moloney from Cappamore, Limerick will host young banjo players. Flautist Mike King from the heart of Sliabh Luachra will also host a class.

Young people from Abbeyfeale’s Traveller and settled communities will begin an audio project on the day, recording songs and stories from older members from both communities in the town. This will take place in the courtyard of St. Ita’s Hall, Abbeyfeale at 4pm.

Fealefest is part of the wider ‘Call & Response’ festival, a series of youth music and arts events taking place throughout September, presented by Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board’s Local Creative Youth Partnership.

The Local Creative Youth Partnership aims to develop creative opportunities for young people in their communities.

Monica Spencer, Creative Youth Partnership Coordinator tells I Love Limerick, “Fealefest celebrates the rich music and cultural heritage of Abbeyfeale in an intergenerational series of music events.

“Young trad musicians have an opportunity to hone their skills with some of the country’s best musicians, and the Traveller community comes together to share songs and stories in a true West Limerick Community event. Abbeyfeale warmly welcomes the public to attend a free concert with Breaking Trad and young guests, to be streamed from the Glórach Theatre on Saturday night.’’
