Sorcha Peyton showcasing new work FEM in Limerick Printmakers

Limerick Printmakers are proud to present FEM, an exhibition of new work by emerging Limerick based artist Sorcha Peyton. 

Peyton is an emerging artist and printmaker currently working and living in Limerick City.  She graduated from Limerick School of Art and Design in 2017 and was awarded the Limerick Print Makers Bursary.

The exhibition will officially open on Thursday, April 26, 2018, from 6 pm with opening words from Aislinn O’ Keeffe, a practising visual artist and activist with ROSA (for Reproductive rights, against Oppression, Sexism and Austerity).

As part of LP’s annual exhibition programme, FEM will be held in Unit 2A, Chapel Court, Cathedral Place (formerly the Garryowen Community Development Project office) and will continue until Saturday, May 12 inclusive.  

Peyton is the recipient of the 2017/18 Limerick Printmakers Bursary Award, an accolade bestowed on an outstanding graduate of LSAD’s ‘Printmaking and Contemporary Practice’ degree program each year. The award has become an integral part of Limerick Printmakers remit and one that reinforces Limerick Printmakers core ethos of both promoting printmaking as an art form and supporting emerging artists working within the discipline.

In July 1999 Limerick Printmakers was set up by three BA printmaking graduates from the Limerick School of Art and Design, Claire Boland, Kari Fry & Melissa O’ Brien. Limerick City Enterprise Board gave Limerick Printmakers a start-up grant in the form of  Irl £12,000 to buy equipment and cover initial overheads.

Menstruation is both a ritualized and regulated subject, viewed historically as a taboo topic that still persists today. This exhibition encourages menstruation to be the forefront of a positive conversation. 

The piece “Absorb” was created in response to the tampon and its disposable nature. The artist’s subtle use of menstrual blood throughout the work introduces a typically censored matter into the public setting.

The inclusion of the menstrual cup in the work promotes an environmentally positive alternative to traditional sanitary products. 
Peyton’s honest representation of the female body is encapsulated within the mixed medium nature of her work. Her exhibition will open from Wednesday, 25 April to Saturday 28 April from 12 pm – 5:15 pm so don’t miss out on this extraordinary display.
