WATCH Flavours of Limerick is a new cookbook in aid of Limerick Marine Search and Rescue

Limerick Community Education groups along with Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board (LCETB) tutors have put together a new book in the form of a cookbook in aid of Limerick Marine Search and Rescue (LMSR).

‘Flavours of Limerick’ is a collection of recipes, memories and artwork from Community Education groups here in Limerick City which was launched virtually by Mayor Collins during the Lifelong Learning Festival.

‘Flavours of Limerick’ contains creative writing, artwork and a smorgasbord of yummy recipes. The cookbook includes 22 recipes ranging from Thomond soda cakes to Asian stir-fry. These recipes have been made in LCE and LCETB cookery classes.

The original idea was thought up by Maeve Cosgrave who is a cookery tutor with LCETB who wanted her classes to be involved in something that would stimulate and engage them.  Maeve said, “We started this cookbook idea in September as I wanted the girls I teach in St Mary’s to get involved in a project that would mean a lot to them. It is basically cookery but there’s a great flavour of art, Irish and craft involved in it as well.” 

Limerick Marine Search and Rescue was established in 1986 by Jimmy Connors and Tony Cusack who were both sports divers at the time. They were asked to help search for a young boy who had lost his life in the waters of Parteen. The two men decided afterward that there was a necessity for a Marine Search and Rescue unit in Limerick. LMSR has grown increasingly since its beginning and now has 26 volunteers that dedicate their time to aid the community.

LSMR like many other charities in 2020 have suffered from the global pandemic that is continuing to sweep the nation due to the lack of funds. Charities like LSMR are currently relying on the kindness of people like Maeve Cosgrave to help keep their charities afloat during these tough times.

All proceeds of the books are going to Limerick Marine Search and Rescue. Copies of the books can be picked up from Limerick Marine Search and Rescue charity shop located on Thomas Street in Limerick City.
