At the signing of the agreement between Fleming Medical and Muscat Pharmacy were: Mike Hogan, Director MENA Enterprise Ireland, Mr Patrick Hennessy, Ambassador of Ireland to the UAE, Dr Mohammed H. Darwish, Honorary Consul of Ireland to Oman, Mr Pat Breen, Minister for Employment & Small Business, Mohamed Yahya. V. A., Head of Sales & Marketing, Muscat Pharmacy, Mark Fleming CEO Fleming Medical, Dr Tom Kelly, Divisional Manger, Enterprise Ireland.

Fleming Medical, a Limerick based medical technology firm on the Dock Road, has received a huge boost after signing a €1.1m distribution deal with Muscat Pharmacy to issue its Medicare range of products in Oman.

Muscat Pharmacy is one of the oldest Pharmacies in Oman. It started in 1968 with a pharmacy at Muscat and it has grown to be a company with 66 retail outlets.

The move will support the Fleming Medical strategy to grow its presence in the Middle East. Founded by Mark Fleming 30 years ago in Limerick, Fleming Medical operates successfully in more than 20 countries worldwide, trading in quality healthcare devices and consumables under the Medicare brand, among others.

Tom Kelly, the divisional manager at Enterprise Ireland, noted the €124m in exports from Irish companies to the UAE in 2015 as a reason for such trade missions. It came after Fleming Medical joined an Enterprise Ireland delegation of 20 Irish firms led by Minister Pat Breen at Arab Health 2017 in Dubai, the largest healthcare exhibition and medical congress in the Middle East.

“Ireland has a well-developed life sciences sector for which we see growth opportunities in the Gulf region,” Kelly said. He hinted that the Arab market has increased in significance now that UK has decided to leave the EU, with Enterprise Ireland aiding Irish companies in identifying new markets for their products and services.

Medtech is booming in Ireland at the moment. Just a few days ago, Dr Nora Khaldi – founder of Irish start-up Nuritas – was awarded the Woman of the Decade in Business and Leadership Award at the recent Women Economic Forum.

“We are delighted to announce our appointment of Muscat Pharmacy as our distributor in Oman – we are very excited in seeing our Irish products on the shelves in Omani Pharmacies.  This announcement is further strengthening both the Fleming Medical & Medicare brands on an international stage – we look forward to exploring more new markets in the next few years,” Mr Fleming said.

Other Irish firms attending the congress included Aerogen, AmRay Medical, CF Pharma Ireland, Crospon, Fleming Medical and IPC Polymers.
