‘Footie and Beauty’ a creative event to inspire young girls to participate in sports took place last weekend and the innovative day was set up by Cheryl-ann Ryan Limerick City Sports Partnership and Aisling Arthur Limerick Youth Service both college students on placement who saw a need to get Limerick girls over 14 active in sport and other areas. The Limerick Youth Service factory Southside space have allowed all girls to take part in 5 weeks training in soccer brought to them by Limerick City Sports Partnership with the goal of winning the tournament. The girls that took part were aged between 14 and 21 with two teams from SouthHill, a team from Limerick City Youth Service and Moyross. The beauty element is going ahead over the next six weeks with deportment and makeup classes being provided by the Bellisimo Academy and make-up artist Mandy O Loughlin.  This creative scheme has allowed for new friendships to be formed and for young girls to learn many new skills. The aim of this celebration was to raise further funding ‘to give back to the girls and help with their futures in sport and beauty’ and also gave young people an opportunity to express themselves through arts and crafts. Leah Melling a 14 year old singer/songwriter with an exceptional gift provided amazing entertainment on the day singing two of her original songs. Leah was ‘delighted to participate on the day’ as she herself has an interest in sports and believes that it is very important for girls to become more involved. Gina Lu another passionate singer also added to the lively atmosphere. Mayor Gerry McLoughlin was there on the day to support the girls and wished them the very best of luck with their sporting futures.
