The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick is offering his condolences to the family of Fr Jack Finucane, Freeman of Limerick, who has passed away at the age of 80.
Mayor Kieran O’Hanlon said: “On behalf of the people of Limerick, I would like to offer condolences to the Finucane family on the death of Fr Jack.”
“It was with great sadness that I heard of Fr Jack Finucane’s death. His work with those from developing countries is unsurpassed. From the Biafran region in Nigeria to Bangladesh and Ethiopia, Fr Jack has tended to some of the poorest people in the world.”
“He co-founded Concern in 1968 along with his brother Fr Aengus, Fr Raymond Kennedy as well as John and Kay O’Loughlin Kennedy. This is a charity which has stood the test of time and is a byword for professionalism and caring.”
“Frs Jack and Aengus were made Freemen of Limerick in 2005 in recognition of their tireless work in Africa and Asia.”
“He was a wonderful man who dedicated his life to those less fortunate,” the mayor added.
Born in Limerick in February 1937, Jack Finucane was ordained in 1963 and joined the Spiritan (Holy Ghost) missionary society before being sent to Biafra in Nigeria. At 26, he was sent to Nigeria, and within four years he was engulfed in the fallout from the Biafra war and the ensuing famine. Concern was founded in response to the famine, with Jack was at the centre of the distribution of the relief goods flown into Biafra by Concern and other relief organisations.
Fr Jack Finucane will repose at Fanagans Funeral Home, 92 Lower Kimmage Road, this Friday and Saturday, from 4pm-6pm. Removal on Sunday to the Church of the Holy Spirit, Kimmage Manor arriving at 6 pm for evening prayer. Funeral Mass on Monday, at 11.30am in Kimmage Church.
