On Friday May 8, the judges of the National Bike Week: Event Grant met at the Limerick Smarter Travel offices to go through the grant applications.

The purpose of this grant is to support people who want to run their own cycling-inspired event during National Bike Week 2015 from June 13 – 21 to help the cycling culture grow here in Limerick. Interested individuals, groups, organisations and businesses were asked to submit plans for events that they would be running.

The judging panel on the day included Richard Lynch, presenter, producer, songwriter and actor, singer and songwriter Leah Melling (check her out on YouTube here), Paul Mannering from Go Eco – Ireland’s Electric Bike Specialists (website here) and High Nelly Irish Vintage Bicycles (website here) and Sharon Mc Meel, wedding and event planner (website here).

After a long day of judging and many applications, Limerick Smarter Travel now has the final list of successful National Bike Week Grant Applications confirmed. The applicants have been informed of the results, and a full list of funded events will be published on the Limerick Smarter Travel website this week.

Richard Lynch of ILoveLimerick.com explained, “What an honour to be asked to take part in an initiative that is bringing the communities of Limerick together in a fun, healthy and environmentally friendly way in celebration of National Bike Week. Get on your bikes!”

There was a wide range of inspirational bicycle-related events planned by a wide variety of groups throughout Limerick city and county. Well done to all who put so much time and effort into the applications!

All of the planned events are free if you wish to participate. If you are interested in seeing a full list of events, you can find them on the website here.

He was named the Limerick Person of the Year (2011) and won an online award at the Metro Éireann Media and Multicultural Awards (2011) for promoting multi-culturalism online. Richard says that the ilovelimerick.com concept is very much a community driven project that aims to document life in Limerick. So, that in 20 years time people can look back and remember the events that were making the headlines.
