Friends and family of Katie O’Neill Collins are coming together to support the much-loved member of their community who has been “bravely battling breast cancer since October 2021”.

The mum of two young kids, Hannah aged 5, and Shane aged 2, has been told her “time is limited”, but her friends who have organised a GoFundMe to help say in “true Katie fashion” she has been thinking about her family and loved ones instead of herself.

“Unfortunately, she has been told, that despite her putting up the strongest, most courageous fight, her time is limited,” Katie’s friends have written on the GoFundMe page which has raised more than  €50,000 with an initial goal of just  €1000.

The page reads, “In true Katie style, Katie is not thinking of herself, but her beautiful young family and has just started an extension on their home to ‘future proof it’ for her gorgeous kids Hannah (5) and Shane (3).”

The friends are hoping to support the family as they aim to “future-proof” the home, asking people to donate whatever they can to show support to Katie and her husband, Colm, and their two kids.

Katie has spoken openly about her journey, telling the Irish Independent how she discovered a “golf ball” sized lump in her armpit when bringing her son, who was just 11 months at the time, to bed.

Katie discovered the lump in October 2021, and because of the notices on social media for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, she says her “heart sank”.

Katie’s friends wrote to supporters on the GoFundMe page, saying, “We would love to help them in any way we can and are asking people to donate a few euros, if they can, to go towards the cost of the extension and to show our support to Katie, Colly, Hannah and Shane.

“Katie, you are a true warrior. We all LOVE you. Thanks for being the best daughter, sister, wife, mother, niece, cousin, aunt, daughter-in-law, sister-in-law and friend to us all.”
