Mary immaculate college unique Age-Friendly initiative blends ‘Gaeilge agus Tech’ in innovative community programme

Mary Immaculate College (MIC) recently marked the conclusion of its Gaeilge agus Teicneolaíocht module, an Age-Friendly initiative delivered through the Enterprise & Community Engagement Office and supported through the Equality, Diversity, Inclusion & Interculturalism (EDII) Project Awards Fund.
The programme brought together students and older members of the community in a unique, hands-on learning experience, the first of its kind.
Led by Dr Síle Ní Choincheannain, Lecturer in Education with expertise in Irish, the programme combined basic Irish language learning with practical digital skills, supporting participants to build confidence using everyday technology in a relaxed and social environment. The module concluded on Monday, 23 March.
Across three interactive workshops, participants explored a range of topics including phone functions as Gaeilge, connecting to Wi-Fi, scanning QR codes, sending emails and messages, and safe online shopping. Sessions also incorporated quizzes, group exercises, and discussions, alongside informal conversation over tea and coffee, helping to create a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for all involved.
A key feature of the initiative was its intergenerational approach, with MIC students facilitating the workshops as part of their own learning. Participants and students worked together throughout the programme, building strong connections and confidence.
Reflecting on the initiative, Dr Ní Choincheannain said, “The idea for this project emerged from a growing interest in Irish language conversation and the challenges many people face using technology in everyday life. Working with our students, we designed workshops to help people over 65 become more confident using their phones for practical tasks. The intergenerational learning, the social aspect and the opportunity to use mórán or beagán Gaeilge created a really positive experience for everyone involved.”
Patricia O’Sullivan, E&CE Manager, said, “This initiative really captures what our Age-Friendly approach at MIC is all about – creating inclusive, welcoming spaces where people can learn, connect and build confidence at their own pace. It’s been fantastic to see the relationships develop between students and participants, and the impact that kind of shared learning can have.”
Feedback from participants highlighted both the learning and social aspects of the programme. Paddy Hyland shared:
“Bhain mé an-taitneamh as na seisiúin ag foghlaim faoi AI. Bhí an macléinn Éadaoin an-chineálta. Mhínigh sí gach rud dom go deas mall agus tuiscinneach. The quizzes and group exercises were lovely and entertaining, with no winners or losers. Traéaslaím go mór leis an bhfoireann teagaisc. Preparation and presentation were gan locht. Molaim sibh ar fad.”
