Limerick senior hurler, Gearóid Hegarty, has been named as the GAA.ie Hurler of the Week following his man of the match performance against Clare on Sunday.
The Treaty hurler stepped up in the second half as Limerick needed inspiration to come back from six points down to earn their path to the All-Ireland Final.
Hegarty was instrumental in setting up important scores for his side and was a constant target for balls into the attacking third of the field.

GAA.ie said, “When Limerick needed leaders in the second half of their All-Ireland SHC semi-final victory over Clare, none stood taller than the towering Hegarty. His ability to win the ball and draw fouls dragged Limerick back into the game, and his use of possession was top class too.”
Hegarty isn’t the only Limerick man being honoured this week; on Tuesday, his teammate Nickie Quaid was announced as the PWC Hurler of the Month for June.
Quaid won the award along with Kerry’s Emma Costello and Galway’s Niamh McPeake who won the PwC GPA Women’s Player of the Month awards for Ladies Football and Camogie, and Kerry’s Dylan Geaney who was the Gaelic Football winner.
Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael, Jarlath Burns, said, “As the Championships ratcheted up their intensity, so too, did the calibre of the performances that decided some incredible games and our four winners reflect that. Dylan, Nickie, Emma and Niamh are worthy ambassadors for all of the stellar individual displays that have illuminated the summer to date. In congratulating them, I also salute our partners in PwC for their continuing commitment to honouring the incredible athletes performing Gaelic games at the highest level.”
Following Sunday’s match, Gearoid Hegarty said the game with Clare was “right up there” as one of the toughest battles they had faced.
He said, “That is an incredible battle. I know there’s massive rivalry between Limerick and Clare, and that’s the beauty of a day like today. But I’ve so much respect, and I know it won’t mean anything to those Clare boys out there right now, but that was an incredible battle. Unfortunately, there had to be a loser on the day, and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way, but that was unbelievable… What a tough game.”
Limerick now look forward to an All-Ireland final against Galway on Sunday, July 19 in Croke Park with a 3:30 pm throw-in time.
