GOING FOR GOLD LAUNCHES NEW CATEGORY WITH €7,500 PRIZE FUND

RUGBY HERO URGES STUDENTS TO DESIGN A LAPEL PIN FOR LIMERICK

Irish Ladies International rugby player, Joy Neville joined forces with Primary and Secondary students and the Mayor of Limerick today (6th March) to launch one of the biggest competitions ever run for students throughout Limerick. Design a lapel pin is a new category in the Going for Gold initiative where students are invited to design a lapel pin that instils pride in Limerick.

The competition, with a prize fund of €7,500, will run for five weeks and is open to primary, secondary and third level students. The winning design will be produced into a gold plated lapel pin that will be used to promote Limerick and highlight the Going for Gold campaign.

Commenting on the new category, Mr Gerry Boland, Director of the JP McManus Charitable Foundation said; “Going for Gold is a great initiative that has proved hugely successful in bringing communities and businesses together to help clean up Limerick. The launch of this new category is an extension of the campaign which will encourage the young people of Limerick to be part of yet another positive step towards improving our city. We hope that many students will participate and we look forward to seeing their artistic creations in the form of a lapel pin.”

Welcoming the new category, Mayor of Limerick, Cllr Gerry McLoughlin said every citizen in Limerick should make Going for Gold their top priority this Summer.
“Limerick Going for Gold has been a positive campaign for Limerick City. It empowers communities to make Limerick a cleaner, brighter place for everyone. I am delighted with the introduction of the new student initiative and look forward to seeing the creative flair of Limerick students reflected in the entries.”

Limerick City Council also released details of the Environment Improvement Grant Initiative 2013 today. Closely linked to the Going for Gold Campaign the Environment Improvement Grant assists groups to carry out environmental work in their community. Application forms have been posted to residents associations and groups across the city and environs. The City Council in association with the JP McManus Charitable Foundation is encouraging groups to avail of this grant scheme to improve their communities and assist them with their Going for Gold initiatives. Once again a €50,000 prize fund has been confirmed for Going for Gold Competition. It is likely that there will be some changes to last year’s Going for Gold categories and these along with the possibility of additional categories will be announced at a later date.
