The Great Limerick Dogathon will take place at Castletroy Neighbourhood Park, Newtown, Annacotty on Sunday, June 5, 2022 from 10.30am. This is a family day, and the aim of this event is to raise funds for dogs and their owners that have been impacted by the war in Ukraine.

It’s heart-breaking to think that millions of pets have been left abandoned in Ukraine, after owners were forced to leave them behind at shelters as they scramble for safety. Groups like PETA on the ground are providing food, blankets and shelter to those small animals that have been rescued or left behind.

Recognising the importance of family pets during the trauma the war has brought, the European Commission is allowing normal strict rules on pet movements to be loosened for pet travel, meaning that more than 600 pets from Ukraine have arrived in Ireland with their owners since February 24, according to The Department of Agriculture.

Funds raised at the Great Limerick Dogathon Event will be distributed to organisations working on the frontline and here to help families with their pets during and after the 3-month incubation period in Ireland with the basic things they need to make their pets safe, comfortable, and secure.

Leah Melling from Barker and Bowes, in Limerick said, “I feel there are many animal charities that need fund raising efforts and it is hoped that ‘The Great Limerick Dogathon’ will become an annual event , and that we can fundraise for them too in the future. The theme of the first event is for the ‘Pets of Ukraine’”.

On the day, there will be a 2 km walk at 11am. Owners and their dogs, or simply those that just want to partake are invited to join us to offer our support and solidarity for Ukraine. A balloon carnival of Ukrainian colours will follow with the team from ‘Party Buffs’ in Annacotty.

There will be kiddies activities on the day, with music and entertainment for everyone to enjoy, and there will be a food tent for humans and non-humans. An Garda Siochana Canine Unit will be joining the event too.

There will be a very special parade ring available for pet owners and their pets to enjoy, with a photo booth available to capture these moments. Competitions such as ‘Best Dressed Dog’ on the day will be judged by dog lovers, Eoin Sheehan, Country Munch and Sarah Jayne Cochrane, Dani’s Closet. There will also be several stalls to include Pet Portraits with Shannen Slattery and many more surprises on the day. MC is by Jack Moloney, Jacks Sweet Treats, Media and socials covered by Laura Macijauskaite from Lemon Nails.

The organisers will also require volunteers on the day and if you are interested, please just message them directly.
