Childrens Grief Centre Awarded a €10,000 grant from the What Works Network Support Fund

The Children’s Grief Centre was recently awarded a grant of €10,000 by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs, What Works Network Support Fund (formerly known as the Quality and Capacity Building Initiative). The What Works initiative aims to inform and educate those working to improve the lives of children and young people by fostering opportunities for shared learning and professional development. 

Sr Helen Culhane, Limerick Person of the Year 2017, founded the centre in 2009 which provides support services for school-aged children and young people affected by loss through death, separation, and divorce in the Mid-West Region. The Children’s Grief Centre sees around 300 children every week, aged 4 to 18 years. 70% of the children who attend have separated parents while 30% has suffered bereavement. Helen’s vision was that the Centre would provide children and young people with a listening ear.

Sr Helen Culhane told ilovelimerick, “We were delighted to receive the grant (What Works Network Support) from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. This grant will assist in helping us to continue the work of supporting children and young people who grieve following parental separation or bereavement.”

The Network Support Fund was set up to support statutory, community and voluntary organisations who are leading or co-ordination networks, learning communities or fora which are promoting increased understanding and use of evidence-informed approaches to prevention and early intervention services for children, young people and their families.

Anne English, Administrator at the Children’s Grief Centre said, “The grant was awarded to the Children’s Grief Centre to aid their efforts in helping to raise awareness of the importance of bereavement support services and of the need to educate practitioners who work with Children.”

The recent announcement of the grant, held at the Children’s Grief Centre on Friday, May 24 was attended by Patricia Ryan, Special Advisor to Dr Katherine Zappone, and Minister for Children and Youth Affairs along with Senator Maria Byrne.
