Griffith College Limerick Graduation 2018 creates new opportunities
The Griffith College Limerick graduation 2018 took place on Friday the November 23, in Thomond Park Stadium. Over 350 guests attended to witness the conferring ceremony. Guest speakers on the night included Mayor Daniel Butler and Senator Maria Byrne. Declan Hannon, captain of the Limerick All-Ireland Senior Hurling Team was awarded the colleges “Professional Excellence Award”, this is the first time such an award has been given outside of Dublin and is a testament to the hard work and success of Declan and all involved in the Limerick Hurling Team.
Daniel Butler Metropolitan Mayor of Limerick spoke about the history of Griffith College in Limerick and the vibrancy the College brings to the city centre. Addressing the graduates he advised them to “cherish the opportunities you now have. Work hard toward achieving your full potential.”
Senator Maria Byrne spoke of her connection with the campus, having once been a student at High School International. She spoke of the opportunities that are now available to young people in Limerick and the advances the city has made in recent years. She also spoke of the great work being done to attract investment to Limerick and to increase job opportunities. She expressed the hope that this would help to: “keep young people, like the graduates here this evening, living and working in the city.”
Professor Diarmuid Hegarty, President of Griffith College, spoke of the work being done at the Limerick campus to meet the training and education needs of local industry and business. Addressing the graduates he expressed the wish: “that you may harness the knowledge and experience you have acquired in Griffith College to achieve what you richly deserve, a successful and fulfilling career.”
Declan Hannon, Captain of the Limerick All-Ireland winning hurling team received a Professional Excellence Award from the College for his achievements on the hurling field. Addressing the graduates he wished them all the best in the future. “Follow your dream,” he advised, “and anything is possible. Your qualification is your ticket to the future.”
Kevin O’Sullivan, Head of the Limerick campus, in his citation speech for Declan Hannon’s award, quoted the boxer Mohammed Ali: “Champions are not made in gyms. Champions are made from something they have deep inside them: A desire, a dream, a vision”.
