Bill Ormsby is 21 years old and from a small town in County Mayo called Foxford. Foxford is well known for its amazing bread and cakes made by the O’Haras of Foxford. He currently in his second year at Limerick Institute of Technology studying Accounting and Finance. Grubbin with Bill started a food review account on Instagram and TikTok where he shares some of his favourite places to eat and drink in Limerick!

Why did you begin a food review account?

To be honest, I have toyed around with starting a food page for a while now as I have always been mad into taking photos of all the different food, drinks and treats that I get. In mid-February, I decided to start up ‘grubbinwithbill’ on Instagram where I would upload pictures of all the different bits I purchased out or bits I make at home.

What are the top three places to get sweet treats in Limerick and what did you order?

The first has to be anywhere that stocks ‘SOS Cookies’. These cookies are amazing and if you have followed my page from the beginning, you would know I have a slight addiction to them. I get them mostly in Abbey River Coffee located near the old Potato Market, Bobby Byrnes located on O’Connell Ave. and Castletroy Farmers Market at Castletroy Town Centre.

The second are two companies that I found through Instagram. The first is called ‘@sugar_rush_delivery’ and they make up these mixed sweet boxes that can be personalised to whatever you like e.g. fizzy/not fizzy, chocolate, crisps etc. They also offer same-day delivery if ordered before 6 pm which is a great service. The second is called ‘@sweet_treats_limerick’ and these do a range of different flavoured cheesecakes, I can say they are AMAZING! I have gotten these on several occasions.

The third would have to be ‘La Cucina’. I have been here numerous times before in which I got the cookie skillet and their wide range of amazing milkshakes. They have a store located in the city centre on Henry St and out in Castletroy.

What are your top three favourite places to get food in Limerick and what did you order?

Due to pizza being my absolute favourite food I would have to say ‘Maple Wood Fired Pizza’ is top shelf. Everything from there is class! From the margarita pizza to the garlic bread to the Reeces peanut butter dessert pizza, the garlic sauce is even amazing! They are located in the Eastlink Business Park on Ballysimon Road and offer a collection and delivery service. Grubbin with Bill

Boojum would have to come in at a close 2nd as I absolutely love burritos. I feel like when you get a Boojum you are not really being ‘unhealthy’! My ‘go-to’ order is a burrito with Mexican rice, vegan bean chilli, mixed veg, hot salsa, jalapeños, guacamole, lettuce & cheese. Boojum is located on Patrick St. right across from Arthurs Quay.

My third favourite place to get food from would have to be any Chinese or Asian takeaway. My favourite ones so far are Madam Mok which is located on Catherine St., Lana which have a store on O’Connell St or in Castletroy and Jumbos which is located in Castletroy. My normal order for any Chinese is mixed veg in satay sauce, egg fried rice and spicy chips.

Where is the best vegetarian place to go in Limerick?

Being vegetarian is a lot easier when there is a nice selection of vegetarian options on the menu. However, that being said, sometimes it is hard to find a place that has good vegetarian options. Normally I always go for pizza or pasta as I enjoy them the most but sometimes if there is a veggie burger on the menu, I will choose that. As for the best vegetarian place in Limerick, I have yet to find that out. I only went vegetarian during the first lockdown so I have not got a chance to see what the best vegetarian place is yet. However, I do hope that when things open up again, I’ll be able to explore what the restaurants in Limerick have to offer us veggies!

How do you come up with ideas on which food to try next?

For ‘Takeaway Friday’ I will explain below but as for other days, I normally go on what mood I am in. There is a great variety of restaurants, cafes and takeaways in Limerick so the list is endless.

What is ‘Takeaway Friday’?

Takeaway Friday is a fun feature that I decided to run on the page which entails me trying a different takeaway every Friday chosen by the people who follow my page. On Thursdays, I upload a question box that enables people to suggest the takeaways for me to try. On Friday, I then post a poll of which were the 2 most popular and the winner of that poll is the takeaway I try. I got this idea from a food blogger that I always watch in Dublin called Conor Ryan who does ‘Curry Tuesdays’, ‘Chipper Thursdays’ and ‘Chicken Burger Saturdays’.

What makes a good meal in your opinion?

For me, it all comes down to flavour. I would not be a fussy eater at all and would eat anything put in front of me, as evidence would suggest. However, if something were lacking in flavour or hot food was cold when I got it, it would pain me to eat it.

Do you enjoy cooking yourself and how did you get into it?

YES!!! I have always loved both cooking and baking! I think it runs in my veins as my great grandfather set up and established the O’Haras of Foxford. O’Haras of Foxford is a bakery in Foxford, Co. Mayo that employs over 140 staff and distributes both bread and cake all throughout Ireland, some parts of the United Kingdom and parts of the USA.

Top three places that serve the best beverages in Limerick and what did you order?

Coffee – If you have followed my page from the beginning, you will have seen I have been trying to go to every café in Limerick. So far, ‘Abbey River’ near the Old Potato Market and ‘Esquires’ on Catherine St. have my heart. I always stick with a reliable americano and I am never let down.

Milkshakes – The best milkshake has to go to either ‘The Locke Burger’ located at Georges Quay or ‘The Hungry Lyons’ on Ennis Road. In both, I got the lotus biscoff milkshake and it was unbelievable.

Iced Coffee – I wouldn’t normally choose an iced coffee, however, when the sun is out, I feel obliged to get one. On numerous occasions, I have gotten an iced mocha from ‘Habit Coffee’ which is located on Thomas St. and I have always been impressed.

What do you love most about Limerick?

Honestly, what is not to love about Limerick… from the amazing scenic walks to the wide range of cafes and restaurants, there is always something to do at any hour of the day. Obviously, when restrictions are lessened there will be a lot more freedom to what people can do. Who knows, over summer we might get back into the restaurants and cafés again.
