GTEL Book Drive has been launched by Gateway to Education Limerick with the aim of getting more donations of current, in-date curriculum books which are desperately needed due to shortage as a result of Covid-19.

To support this book drive Gateway to Education Limerick have made vouchers for their charity shop at No 9 Wickham Street, Limerick which offer 20% off a purchase.

Gateway to Education Limerick (GTEL) is an education support charity based on Wickham Street in Limerick. The main aim of GTEL is to make education more affordable for Limerick-based families. They focus on reducing the cost of going to school here in Ireland. Part of this includes getting books into the hands of students at a reduced cost to their customer base. 

Gateway to Education (GTEL) has always been focused on providing school books, uniforms and other supplies to families who need them. The hidden costs of sending children to school can be very high, and the founder Suzanne Roche realised something had to be done.

This was when she started this charity project back in 2012. GTEL has been helping make education more accessible over the years, by accepting donations of used schoolbooks, uniforms and other items and selling them on at a discounted price. GTEL also takes a sustainable approach and is focused on reducing, reusing and recycling. In 2020 alone, just over 8000 items were either resold or recycled that might have otherwise gone to landfill.

Getting one of these vouchers is very simple: All you need to do is donate 2 or more in date primary or secondary school books (T&Cs apply). The 20% discount applies to a range of items in the store such as fashionable second

hand clothes, household items, novels and of course any school books or uniforms you might need for the coming year.

The main donation drop off point is at Unit 1, Tait Business Centre, Lady’s Lane, Dominic Street, Limerick, V94 83V1, open 10am-2pm Monday through Friday. The shop at No 9 Wickham street can also accept some donations but keep in mind that storage space is limited there.

With thanks to Edward Life Sciences Foundation and Energy for Generations Fund run by the ESB, for supporting the Gateway to Education project; and helping families make savings on education a reality.

Assistant Manager, Paul Goodwin explains “With the Irish school curriculum frequently changing, new editions of books appear very often if not annually. We rely on the support of the community to donate second hand books that we can then supply to students who need them. Getting newer editions is always a challenge. We are fast approaching a new school year and book buying season, we could always use more new editions of books to help families offset the large book costs that they will be facing these coming months. That’s what this book drive is all about.”

Gateway to Education founder, Suzanne Roche says, “This is a new project we are trying this year that offers a 20% discount in our charity shop. We hope people will come and donate and find something they like in our shop. I’ve always believed in the environmental approach and encourage the community to reuse and recycle items rather than letting them go to waste in the landfill. You never know what secondhand gems you might find in a charity shop.”
