Limerick band Hammy and The Pilgrim have entered The 2FM Play the Picnic Competition which sees 30 unsigned bands compete for a chance to play at Electric Picnic 2017.
The Top 10 acts with the most votes get to play at Electric Picnic this September. The overall winner also wins a slot on The Cosby Stage as well as a full day studio session in 2FM’s Studio 8.
Limerick four-piece Hammy and the Pilgrim burst onto the music scene in September 2016 as a hugely successful opening act for Le Galaxie. After a short break as a result of losing a member to the far-east, the blues rock band has re-invented itself.
The band now comprises of Shane Ryan on drums, Wesley Carmody on Bass, Patrick Kearns on electric guitar and new to the lineup Jason Anderson on guitar and vocals, bringing his own fresh style and distinctive sound.
Hammy and The Pilgrim Bassist Wesley Carmody said: “We started out a year ago playing locally, once we were confident with some of the tracks we selected 3 and recorded a debut EP called Hammy and the Pilgrim. This was done in open door studios with Joe Mulcahy and we were extremely happy with the reception it received.”
“At the minute we are finishing our second EP and have just released the first single ‘Put It On Ice’. The EP will be launched at the end of August. We are also sharing the stage with Hermitage Green on Saturday 29th July in Kilkee’s ‘Marquee By The Sea’.”
They launched their self-titled three-song EP, recorded at Open Door Studios in Limerick City, shortly after the gig and are quickly gaining traction. It is available on Apple Music and Spotify and debuted at #2 on the Irish Blues Album Chart.
The EP opens with Whatever This Is, a laid back song with clear, mellow vocals and story-telling lyrics. Slow guitar solos create a summer vibe, vaguely reminiscent of Elbow. This leads into Buckle Down Tease, more of a classic rock anthem with blues vocals, influenced by Jimi Hendrix.
The EP finishes on earworm ‘Hey Girl’, which has more of a rock’n’roll vibe that you can’t help but tap your feet along to. These three chilled songs make for easy listening and show Hammy and The Pilgrim’s huge potential.
Speaking of the 2FM Play The Picnic Competition, Carmody said: “We’re delighted to be shortlisted by RTE to play Electric Picnic. It gives us a chance to show off our music both old and new. We enjoy playing live and giving people a chance to hear the songs in a setting like Electric Picnic.”
He added: “To play something the size of Electric Picnic is the reason we play and create music. It would be a milestone for any band to play at Ireland’s biggest festival.”
Hammy & The Pilgrim are looking forward to a number of gigs throughout summer 2017, including Crane Lane in Cork City and The Fuaim Gathering Music & Arts Festival in August.
