HearSay International Audio Arts Festival returns to the mountain village of Kilfinane, Co.Limerick, for its 4th installment from April 4-7, 2019.

Over the course of 4 days this tiny village will be taken over by the world’s finest audio makers who bring with them a captivating, immersive and intimate programme of events.

HearSay means passion and free-flowing inspiration rooted in a real sense of community. It fosters collaboration and imagination, compelling insights, creative challenges and unique experiences.

Previous attendees and contributors of the festival include, Kaitlin Prest: award-winning podcast creator and audio artist, Julia Barton: public media editor, reporter and producer, Julie Shapiro: executive producer of ‘Radiotopia’ and co-founder of the Third Coast International Audio Festival and Jonathan Mitchell: executive producer of ‘The Truth’ podcast, among many others.

Following the success of a booked out 2017 festival (with 90 events spread over 19 unique venues) director Diarmuid McIntyre is excited to see what is in store for Hearsay19, especially entries to the HearSay Audio Prize: “Since 2014, the HearSay Audio Prize has attracted incredible entries from every corner of the globe that have been infused with the adventurous spirit of the festival. They have been sonically experimental, exquisitely simple, deliciously intimate, and above all inspirational. Our winners have been veterans and novices, sound artists, filmmakers and documentary makers, students and podcasters. They’ve come from all around the world: Argentina, Israel, United States, Australia, Denmark, Belgium, Ireland, Italy, Canada, Germany, United Kingdom.”

The 2017 festival included events such as, In a Mile in My Shoes, presented by The Empathy Museum. Visitors were invited to walk a mile in the shoes of a stranger whilst listening to their story. Dream, an event by Kaitlin Prest, had its audience take a collective nap while being regaled with a surreal narrative that included snippets of audio from other attendees and artists.

HearSay Festival invites unique performances and activities by all its participants.

Registration for HearSay19 is now open to the public. HearSay is fiercely independent, but as a result operates on a tiny budget, with a huge amount of goodwill. A fixed fee ensures the survival of the festival and aims to make HearSay sustainable on an ongoing basis, it is also flexible to suit all budgets. HearSay19 Passes are strictly limited due to the size of the village and the capacity of the beautiful spaces used including an old church, a local’s living room and library so get booking early to avoid disappointment!

This year the festival will see 80 events/sessions which shall take place over the 4 days of the festival. These will range from deep insights into the craft of creative audio to experiences with sound at their core. HearSay offers possibilities for a playful experiment, intriguing collaborations, and fresh conversations. Following a promising response to the festival’s first Open Call in 2017, the festival is ready to offer a chance to everyone who has previously attended a HearSay Festival the opportunity to pitch an event, session or experience. More than one entry per artist is allowed.

The Hearsay Prize 2019 offers a total of 9 awards including 2 Overall Prizes, Best Irish Produced Award and Best Student Award. Early bird entry closes on 14th November while the final closing date for the HearSay Prize 2019 is 12th December. The shortlist will be announced on 23rd January 2019.
HearSay is more than just the incredible line-up of events, it’s about a coming together of people who are passionate about audio and the possibilities that HearSay offers for collaboration, creativity and conversation. The whole festival is a labour of love. It’s a huge undertaking on a tiny budget and it could not take place without a monumental effort by the HearSay voluntary crew drawn from local Kilfinane people and visiting participants from across Ireland and around the world. Event organisers are looking for people who would be willing to commit a substantial amount of their time over the course of the festival. As a member of the crew, you’ll be assigned a role on a specific team. Joining as a member of the HearSay19 Crew promises to be a fun and fulfilling experience.
