I don’t normally share or write about very personal happenings in my life but I really wanted to share with my reader’s something positive that has happened in my life over the last six weeks. Having experienced the loss of three people close to me in a short space of time, my good friend John McNamara, my mam and my dad, I found myself depressed and stressed out all the time and not able to sleep. I think it was the toughest point in my life and my grief felt overwhelming. I knew I needed to do something to change my life but I didn’t know what and found myself struggling with my mental health. A good friend of mine recommended trying holistic therapy, a diverse field of alternative medicine in which the “whole person” is focused on, not just the malady itself. Many techniques and therapies are used such as reflexology, massage or reiki.
I used google to explore my options and low and behold I found one of the most reputed holistic therapy centres in Ireland actually in Limerick! The Holistic Centre of Excellence is in Murroe, Co, Limerick and I have been going there for weekly reiki treatments for over a month and it has changed my outlook on life. I am dealing with my stress in a productive and healthy way. I was so stressed after my mother passed away and I could not sleep and now I am in a much better place and sleeping like a baby. I am glad I have the opportunity to share my experiences with other people who are also looking to heal.

As I said I have been getting reiki which is a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel totally safe life-force energy into the patient by means of touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient’s body and restore physical and emotional well-being. This is just one of the services offered at the centre and I loved it so much that I actually went with my partner Hugo this past Friday and we got our certificates in Reiki Level One!
As well as offering services to heal the public, the centre is also a private college that offers a full-time diploma in Holistic Therapies as well as part-time individual modules.
Anna Gibson-Steel, the founder of the Holistic Centre of Excellence, says the centre was founded to produce holistic therapists who can work with clients to fill a gap in the medical profession in helping with symptoms such as stress and other mental illnesses.
“People are really realising there is another element to health care, and holistic healing is all about regaining your health and then staying well so you don’t get sick,” said Anna Gibson-Steel. Because of this way of thinking, students accepted into the Holistic Centre of Excellence are interviewed to assure they are fully motivated to take part in the course.
The ethos of the Holistic Centre of Excellence is to nurture the student in their own personal development while simultaneously educating them to the highest standard in the theory, practicalities, and legalities of being a professional therapist.
Exclusive to HCE is their lifetime mentorship program, where each student will be mentored for life. They also have a scholarship program which we offer each year. All courses at HCE are approved by ARCHTI, Ireland’s leading pan-therapy organisation.
They have trained over 400 students since 2004 from the headquarters in their idyllic peaceful setting near Murroe Village, Co Limerick which is just 10km from the University of Limerick.
The Holistic Centre of Excellence works with more than twenty affiliates that include five mentors. Students studying at the centre have a personal mentor, who will act as a mentor for life each mentor has a minimum of Reiki Master Teacher Qualification, though most mentors have many more qualifications.
The Holistic Centre of Excellence is the only college in Ireland offering the opportunity to obtain 12 full qualifications and introductions to 30 other healing subjects, in just 9 months. This is achieved by having very small classes taught by passionate experienced teachers. In recent years they have attracted many mature students wishing to change to a fulfilling career.
Shiobhra Stokes, Holistic Centre of Excellence Director says her passion lies in the centre’s outreach programme. The outreach programme is self-funded and works with communities, businesses and healthcare workers throughout Ireland’s Mid-West.
“I feel that having two children with disabilities – many people living with a disability have forgotten what a positive healing experience is,” she said, adding, “They are being prodded and poked in a medical capacity. With holistic healing, it is a very reassuring healing touch whether it is reflexology, massage or reiki.”
All directors at the Holistic Centre of Excellence practice professionally; and Ann Marie Butler has had a Beauty Therapy business for over ten years. She says that having faced trouble in her past has given her the experience to help people who are going through similar situations.
Ann Marie says the course has taught her that although things can get challenging in life, it is important to stay present in it and enjoy the positives it brings:
“I think a lot of people are going on in life, they’re just not enjoying it. This course will not only teach you great skills, it will teach you how to live.”
