August is another busy month for Whats on at the Hunt Museum – August 2017, with many exhibitions, lectures, and readings, special events, family friendly events and the National Heritage Week taking place. The following events will be taking place for the month of August.

 

EXHIBITIONS

Jack B. Yeats and Paul Henry: Contrasting Visions of Ireland

Friday, June 2 – Saturday, September 30

This summer, we are featuring two of Ireland’s most important 20th-century artists, in the exhibition Jack B. Yeats and Paul Henry: Contrasting Visions of Ireland from June to September. Billed to be an exhibition of both national and international significance, it features 50 works, many of which are not usually on public display. This brings together paintings drawn from private and public collections including works from the European Investment Bank Collection in Luxembourg.

 

 

 

Curators Choice

Tuesday, August 1 – Thursday, August 31

Naomi O’Nolan, the Museum’s Head of Collections and Exhibitions, selects one piece every month for display at The Hunt Museum. This month is displayed a work of Emily Robards.

 

The artist will be participating in an informal discussion as part of our Artist Conversation series on August the 30th

In August, The Hunt Café will display pieces by Emer Casey. Limerick Printmakers will take over The Hunt Café walls throughout 2017 adding a unique ambiance to Limerick’s best riverside restaurant.

 

 

 

 

 

TALKS AND LECTURES: 

Highlight Lecture with Sarah McCutcheon

‘Artists and Archaeology: John Mulvany’s a View of Kilmallock’, by Sarah McCutcheon

Monday, August 14, 1 pm-2 pm

This lecture will explore the artist John Mulvany, including the painting A View of Kilmallock, which reveals the archaeological, architectural and historical importance of Kilmallock.

Summer Exhibition Lecture Series

Thursday, August 17, 1 pm-2 pm

In conjunction with the summer exhibition Jack B. Yeats and Paul Henry: Contrasting Visions of Ireland, a lecture series will take place once a month. In August, come along for a lecture by archaeologist and photographer Brian Mac Domhnaill and painters Gentian Lulanaj and Paul Mc Kenna. The project engages with the people and the landscapes that Paul Henry and his wife Grace encountered in the West of Ireland.

Artist Conversation Series with Emily Robards Wednesday

August 30, 11 am

Emily Robards is a visual artist, surreal poet, practicing hermit and country mouse. She works with the themes of home, nature, love, and the self. Her practice links together the spiritual and natural world, with an underlining narrative of innocence and the uncanny; it is concept and process driven with symbolic emphasis. The work arises from the self, drawing from the past while trying to take control of the present. Robards is inspired by the primitive and sees beauty in the broken.

Born in County Limerick, Ireland; Robards graduated in 2014, from Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) where she studied Fine Art Printmaking and Contemporary Practice (BA Hons).

 

SPECIAL EVENTS

Get Hands On: Hunt Handling Sessions

Every Tuesday and Friday, starting August 1 up until August 25, 11 am- 12 pm – Free with admission.

Once again we have opened up The Collection so visitors can Get Hands On and up close with many of our fascinating objects. There will be a topic explored each week. The topics that will be explored include The Bronze Age, Curiosities, Personal Hygiene, and Combat.

 

 

Heritage Week

Saturday 19 August 2017 – Sunday 27 August 2017

This week will celebrate our natural heritage. The Museum is organising a range of events and activities including:

Talks exploring Limerick’s rich marine inheritance, Local historian Sharon Slater will speak on the Abbey Fishermen Histories; exploring how Limerick’s River Shannon was affected by their life and work, Gary McMahon from the ‘Ilen project’ will talk about their work in rebuilding the cultural interface between Limerick and its wondrous waterways, family friendly tours of our collection and Jack B. Yeats & Paul Henry ‘Contrasting Visions of Ireland’ summer exhibition exploring beautiful natural landscapes, ‘Bee Loud Glade’ workshop for kids, and Nevsail Watersports Limerick – Kayaking tours on The River Shannon.

 

 

 

KIDS AND FAMILIES

Kids Arts and Crafts Club

‘Rainbow weaving fish craft’ First Sunday of every month, August 6, 2:30 pm – 4:40 pm

The Kids Art and Crafts club provides a chance to enjoy getting crafty with your kids, with a different theme every session. Suitable for ages 4-8 years old.

Summer Camp (suitable for kids aged 5-12)

There are 3 more weeks of Summer Camp left, commencing on each of the following Mondays: 7th of August, 14th of August, 21st of August

This camp will be inspired by the 20th century artworks on display in our summer exhibition by Paul Henry and Jack B. Yeats. Through drama, music, puppetry, clay and collage activities, camp kids will inhabit these paints and connect with the characters depicted in them. Many more creative activities will also be included. These will be confirmed in coming weeks.
