Irish Chamber Orchestra’s ICO Schools is set to light up University Concert Hall on Wednesday, 12 May at 11 am with its annual Gala Show

Irish Chamber Orchestra’s transformative music education programme, ICO Schools, is set to light up University Concert Hall on Wednesday, 12 May at 11am with its annual Gala Show, “MIX TAPE”. This joyful celebration showcases the creativity, talent, and dedication of over 410 children from Le Chéile N.S. and St. Mary’s N.S., Limerick, who participate in this unique in-school music initiative each week.

Launched in 2008 (formerly known as Sing Out With Strings), ICO Schools provides over 100 hours of high-quality music education every week, fully integrated into the school curriculum. Every child receives free tuition and is given an instrument to bring home, nurturing not only musical skills but also confidence, discipline, and a deep sense of pride.

Since its inception, over 3,000 students have written and performed original compositions, with many taking to the stage at prestigious venues across Limerick, including The Hunt Museum, Limerick City Gallery and University Concert Hall. This year’s show is no exception, “MIX TAPE” features a vibrant mix of student-composed pieces and popular favourites, all brought to life by the energy and spirit of the children themselves.

The performance opens with a medley of favourite songs, followed by the Schools Orchestra. Younger pupils (Junior to 2nd Class) will charm the audience with classics such as Down By the Bay and Three Little Birds, while senior students (3rd to 6th Class) perform Count Me In by Bruno Mars alongside their own compositions, reflecting themes of hope, unity, and imagination.

The children will be joined on stage by some of Limerick’s finest musicians including Cian Boylan (keyboard), Dave Keary (electric guitar), and John Daly (drums). As always, ICO musicians—including Kenneth Rice (violin) and Malachy Robinson (electric bass) have been working closely with the children, offering mentorship and musical collaboration throughout the year.

ICO Schools is a cornerstone of the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s vision for community connection, using music to inspire creativity, foster resilience, and build a strong sense of belonging among young people in the heart of Limerick.
