Iolar Training and Limerick Social Service Centre will be running free Digital Skills for Citizens computer and internet training courses in Limerick on September 3. The courses are open to everyone and will run for two hours per week for five weeks.

This free training is particularly useful for people who have little or no experience of using computers and the internet. Nowadays, many government, commercial and private services are available online. The Digital Skills for Citizens courses ensure that people can learn the skills to access the internet and not feel left behind in the internet era.

“Training is aimed at beginners and new users and gives participants the knowledge, skills, and confidence to use the internet. “ Enda O’Callaghan, the Senior Trainer of Iolar Training said.

Basics of using computers, learning how the internet works, knowledge of safety and security online, emailing, using search engines and websites and accessing government services are core modules. Also, everyday transactions, including paying bills online, booking flights, making voice and video calls and using apps for downloading and opening files are included in the courses.

Participants could choose additional modules for learning about online shopping, online banking, and security, digital photography, managing social media, using YouTube instructional videos and accessing specific government services, such as paying motor tax.

The learning environment is fun and interesting and learners are encouraged to ask questions and participate fully.

Senior Trainer Mr. O’Callaghan told ilovelimerick, “Our experienced trainers make learning fun and interesting, and the small group sizes ensure everyone gets individual attention. It has been immensely rewarding for our trainers to be able to give back to their local communities and see people learning new skills and enriching their lives.”

The courses are suitable for beginners and are completely free. Access to a PC, laptop, tablet or smartphone is helpful, but not essential. An Eircode (postcode) is required to register. Courses will run on Mondays at 9 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM, 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM.

Iolar Training has been delivering the free Digital Skills for Citizens courses across Limerick, Cork, and Kerry now since the initiative commenced in 2017. The training is delivered on behalf of the Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment and they have successfully trained hundreds of trainees from various backgrounds and cultures. Iolar Training has worked with trainees from all over the world, of all ages – including several trainees in their 90s.
