Limerick native and Ardscoil Rís past pupil, Jack McGinn has been elected as President of the Irish Second Level Students Union (ISSU) with his term running from July 10, 2024, following his election in April.
Having previously served as the ISSU’s Education Officer from July 2021 to July 2023, Jack brings a wealth of experience to his new role.
During his time as Education Officer, he made some important contributions which include securing the ISSU’s seat on the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) and overseeing the publication of the 2023 Leaving Certificate Applied Report.
Jack told I Love Limerick he was “delighted” to have been elected as ISSU President, he said, “I am delighted to take on the role of President of the Irish Second-Level Students’ Union (ISSU). The ISSU is a powerful education stakeholder, who has proven they are as effective and capable as any other. Having been involved in the ISSU Executive for a number of years, I look forward to leading the organisation over the next year.”
In 2022, at just 15 years old, Jack’s work earned him a spot in the Irish Times’ “Top 50 Ones to Watch”, showing the impact his activism has had.
An active member of various youth councils and panels, Jack represents Ireland on the Ticktock Global Council and is a council member of the National Youth Council. He is also involved with the Ombudsman for Children Youth Advisory Panel and the SpunOut Youth Action Panel for the southern region.
As ISSU president, Jack will lead the union as the main representative and spokesperson for both the union and for second-level students across Ireland.
Chairing meetings of Coiste Gnó and guiding the work of Coiste Gnó Officers, ensuring they meet their work plans and Directive Mandates; Jack will also serve as a member of the group’s Senior Leadership Team.
The ISSU president told I Love Limerick his duties will see him represent secondary-level students when engaging with the Department of Education. During his tenure, he hopes to connect with bodies within the organisation and reform the Regional Officer Body in a bid to strengthen the ISSU grassroots connection.
McGinn’s extensive experience and dedication to student representation position him well to lead the ISSU effectively, advocating for the interests and voices of second-level students across Ireland.
