Clare native Jade Hoynes will undertake a 250km triathlon she has called “The Long Way in One Day” on Saturday, August 28. The inspiring young woman is raising awareness and funding for Samaritans Ireland and Sejare Adult Respite House, part of the Daughters of Charity services in Limerick.

The triathlon begins with a 4km swim, starting at Lakeside Leisure Centre, Killaloe at 6am. From there, a 20km cycle will take Jade from Killaloe to Ennis, then on to Limerick, where she will arrive at the Samaritans building. Jade will then embark on a 46km run to complete the triathlon, passing the Sejare Adult Respite House on her way.

“The triathlon itself is a symbolic event for me. Certain parts of the route have been selected for a reason that means something to me. I will also be achieving a huge goal of mine while having my family and friends present, so it’ll be a day I won’t forget.” says Jade.

Jade is fundraising for the Samaritans as a result of her own experience.

“Throughout my teen years, I struggled a lot with my mental health, my self-esteem, and my self-worth but in late 2013 – early 2014, I was personally going through a very difficult time. In Spring 2014, I came across Samaritans on the internet, and I decided to use their walk-in service. I travelled to the branch in Limerick, it took me a while to build up the courage and knock on their door, but I did eventually and asked if there was someone I could speak to. I was feeling extremely anxious beforehand, but the staff were so welcoming and reassuring, offering me tea as they showed me to one of the private rooms where I waited to speak to a volunteer. The walk-in process was so easy, simple and stress-free.”

“The funds raised will help volunteers to be able to offer their life-saving support to those who really need to talk and who are struggling with their mental health, just like they helped me all those years ago.”

Sejare Adult Respite House in Annacotty has also been a great help to Jade’s family in recent years.

“Jasmin is my younger sister and she was diagnosed as being on the ASD spectrum from about 18 months of age. In 2014, she was offered a placement at the Daughters of Charity Lisnagry day services, and before long had settled quite well into a daily routine. Attached to the DOC services is a respite facility called “Sejare House”, which offers respite to parents and families that are caring for a family member with additional needs.”

Jade hopes to raise funds to help purchase a new specially adapted minibus for service users.

‘This event is so meaningful to my family and I am honoured to be am raising awareness and funds for Samaritans and Sejare Adult Respite House.”
