The Jingle all the Way Charity 5k will take place on Saturday December 5, on the UL campus, in aid of the Mid-Western Cancer Foundation. This event in now in its second year, with the 2014 5k event having been branded as a worthy and successful endeavour.

The Mid-Western Cancer Foundation (MWCF) centre, based at University Hospital Limerick, provides a full range of services for patients diagnosed with cancer, including an inpatient Ward and Haematology/Oncology Day Ward where patients can attend for pre-diagnosis, at diagnosis time and for treatment thereafter.

Leo Kirby, organiser of the Jingle all the Way 5k, encourages people to take part on the day, to support “a very worthy cause” for the Foundation. The walk will commence at 11am the square across from the Pavilion Club and people are encouraged to wear a Santa hat, to “add to the theme of the walk.”

Registration for the walk is priced at €10 per person and anyone who wants to participate can register on the MWCF EventBrite page, below.

The MWCF has confirmed that the Chairman and all Directors and Board members of the Foundation are volunteers and do not receive remuneration, to reassure people that their much-needed donations are used in the region to enhance services for patients attending the centre, and for the research at UL.

Also included with the service is a Regional Specialist Breast Unit, Radiotherapy Centre and Palliative Care Services.

Organisers of the charity event hope to raise funds and awareness for the centre, so it can continue to provide their critical services to the people of the Mid West, with a Support Centre also in place. This centre offers support groups, psychological support and complementary therapies in a quiet and peaceful environment.

Caring for a family member who is suffering from cancer can be traumatic, which the MWFC acknowledges. To ease this stress, the Patient Information and Support Centre provides patient and their families with up-to-date, research-based information on the different forms of cancer and their treatments, by qualified and experienced staff.

Funds raised by the charity will be used to better the Cancer Centre facilities, to offer patients the best treatment, services and cutting edge technology.

Printed tickets must be provided on the day, by people taking part in the event. If attendance is not possible on the day, a donation can still be made on the MyCharity site, below.

“Any donation, no matter how small, is hugely appreciated,” Mr Kirby said, thanking people in advance for their support.
